Treats that won't hurt
So two days after I announced my plateau on this blog, I hopped on the scales and found I'd dropped 800 grams, and have stayed down there all week! I'm now nearly at the 9kg loss mark and it's starting to feel noticeable to more than me. I actually ran out of time to measure myself, but I'm going to treat myself to that tomorrow- I am looking forward to the 10kg mark, as I'm planning to take an "after" photo to place alongside a before photo for this blog.
I'm looking forward to reaching the 10kg mark for another reason: I've got an incentive programme going that is not only for me but for my three girls too. I've promised them a weekend away together, with some high-quality family time, once I hit that 10kg mark. We're planning to book a bach somewhere and take a pile of books and games and spend time exploring the area with plenty of walks. (They'll probably pack their scooters!) I figure that as some people seem to reward putting ON weight, I may as well celebrate it coming off.
Having incentives is a great way to keep you going and prevent you from reaching for a mid afternoon treat if your will power is waning. Some of my treats are actually food related, such as buying a whole mango and having it ALL to myself, or buying a really expensive packet of tea, as opposed to gumboot tea.
When I have lost 15kg, it's going to be a visit to a spa for a bit of relaxing massage. Twenty kilos is the biggie - I'm planning a kid-free weekend away, with my parents on board to take care of the kids. I haven't really thought a lot further than that (I've found breaking a big goal into smaller chunks works best, and I'm focusing on reaching these smaller goals first).
Changing my perspective has helped me to change what I see are my treats. Going to the gym for a Balance class is one of my treats, walking the beach is a treat, and having a few hours' child-free time is a BIG treat. I'll buy a trashy mag and read it while having a quiet peppermint tea in a cafe to get my treat hit for the week if I need it. I've grown to love finding little things that are beneficial and can also be delightful, and they all make me feel as though I'm indulging in something just as nice as a ooey gooey fudgy goodness of an amazing icecream sundae.
One of the reasons that many people overeat is that food can feel like an achievable treat when you are tired, or stressed or just feeling a little unappreciated. Finding non-food treats (of the small variety) can provide you with a better reward, and not damage the state of your health. What are some of the things you treat yourself with?

An ice cold Bundaberg diet Ginger Beer instead of alcohol - zero weight watchers points and tasty to boot! 10 years after major weight loss and still keeping it off. I have found that the non-food treat scheme works brilliantly. I buy items for a hobby I have and definitely enjoy some alone time away from kids and hubby too.
Clothes, shoes, underwear, makeup, books, magazines...
@Mel #1 - me too on the Fruju - I'm a big icecream fan, so I decided to replace icecream with iceblocks. Figured its was a reasonable compromise.
Congrats on the progress so far, very happy for you :)
I tend to save my treats for one day of the week...it's usually Monday for obvious reasons! And I indulge in some chocolate raisins!
Cadbury pinky... only 2.5 ww points. I lost 25kgs last year and ate a fair few of these when I had the points spare and a chocolate craving.
I think I've said this before, but I will go crazy cutting out ALL sweet foods, so I have a small chocolate treat on Fridays. Except if there is another event happening, such as a little get together I'm going to tonight where food will be plentiful, I'll have my treats then instead - it also avoids the anti-social thing or the having to explain thing.
As for non-food treats - CDs and music magazines go down well with me. I don't generally set goals that result in treats at certain points, I just buy a treat when I feel like I need one. Helps that I have no dependants to answer for, I can do that. If I did set goals, then things like massages/facials would probably feature, along with other things I might want, like a new purse or something for the house, things I've had my eye on but are completely frivolous purchases and should perhaps be 'earned' in some way, both to treat myself and moderate such purchases! Like Mel, I will also be in line for new clothes shortly, two pairs of pants are already falling off me and I need some new tops anyway, but am waiting till I'm the next size down. I see them more as a necessity (for work) than a treat though! Maybe a treat item, something swish for outings or something a little pricier than usual is in order too.
ok- can I just say how encouraging it is to hear of some of your progress too? Well done on all of YOUR hard work. It's awesome to see!

My biggest craving is ice cream - i eat frujus too (super sweet pineapple - yum!) & anything which is sorbet rather than cream based. Those new fruju fruit whip bars are really good http://www.tiptop.co.nz/fruju.html choc wise - pinky, milky way, anything small & 'airy' or marshmallowy rather than thick slabs of chocolate. I do get serious cravings for jelly lollies though - especially milk bottles & starwberries & cream :)hmm what else...some brands of yoghurt are good too & Weight watchers hot chocolate's always a nice low cal comfort non food wise I find buying little girly bits & pieces makes me feel happy - inspiring magazines, beauty products, spa treatments...etcetc Excited for you to reach the 10kg mark Rachel - well done!
@Jane - I had someone suggest Bundaberg Diet as a good drink, but I tried it last weekend and cant STAND it!! I think its because I can taste the artificial sweetner, and I just dont like that taste in anything (I've never managed more than a few mouthfuls at a time of diet / coke zero)... Each to their own tastes though of course. I'm just thrilled at having pretty close to completely given up caffeine as part of this journey!
@LB - have you also found that ice cream often tastes too creamy / rich now that you're not having it very often? I can only have very small amounts before it gets sickening now, which is good I guess.
@Nicola - I need new clothes for work too, but with money being a bit tight (wedding argh!), they are totally a treat, since the old ones are looking seriously tatty!! My real treat dress I hope to buy is to be able to buy something seriously sexy for Simply Ceroc (a whole weekend dance party) come October, without looking slutty... Since its about my next time I have an excuse to dress like that!
@Mel - try making your own ginger beer. I do, and can pretty much garuntee that theres little to no sugar left in there by the time its done fermenting...which reminds me, I need to start making more, hubby is starting to cost me a fortune in soft drinks again...
My weigh and measure is next week...I'm a bit nervous, cause I dont feel any different and my clothes dont seem to be fitting any different either, so i may have just wasted a gym subscription....

When I "Need" a food-treat, I tend to have something like a fruju iceblock. On WW its only worth 1 point, which is nothing in the grand scheme of things, and its sweet and really decadent feeling without being naughty.
When I hit 85kg (which is about 4.6kg lost and 400g away as of Tuesdays weigh in) and can hold it for a week, I am allowed to go shopping for some new clothes and spend about $150, since I have had no new clothes in months.
Beyond that, chances are I wont have any more major milestones to hit and reward... I was about 82kg most of the time at uni, so chances are that 80kg is going to take a really long time to get to, which I accept. With a wedding coming up this year, so long as I get to about 80kg (and / or my waist back down to a size 12 measurement like it was 2 years ago) before my dress fitting, my work will have all been worth it :)
Congrats on the 9kg. Thats a massive achievement.
