What is the nature of evil?

Last updated 14:04 06/11/2007

duchovny.jpgJust in case anyone was wondering, I don't think TV3's new David Duchovny show Californication is evil (unlike certain representatives of the Catholic Church).  In fact if the promos are anything to go by I'd say it's a bloody Godsend given what that night's TV schedule has looked like up till now.  Surely I should be thanking some kind of deity for filling the Thursday night gap between Bro' town and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip rather than "the other guy".

Of course, I haven't actually seen it yet, but then neither have the aforementioned Church reps.  That's par for the course with these sorts of stories though isn't it?  I also wasn't offended by the infamous South Park episode featuring the bleeding statue of the Virgin Mary, but I'm not Catholic so no surprise there.  It does beg the question, though, of whether there is a difference between something being "offensive" and "evil".  Personally, I think there's a world of difference.

I can understand why people are a bit worried, though.  The show apparently contains drug-taking, vomit, violence, rape, not to mention bad parenting.  So a bit upsetting for people, granted, but these things happen every day.  They're probably happening right now.  It's not people pretending to do these things that's the problem.  It's the people who are actually doing them.  If the "evil" is anywhere it's in the real world, not the imagined.

In the discussion of last week regarding Halloween, one earnest commenter expressed the opinion that Halloween is a celebration of evil.  Really?  I thought it was a celebration of consumerism and candy.  Though I suppose you could make a case for both of those being "evil".  I think you can only categorise something as "celebration" of "evil" if the people celebrating are actually thinking "Wow, evil rocks!" or "How can I make my life more evil?" or "Why can't every day be evil like Halloween?"  I somehow doubt that's what was going on regardless of how hyped up on sugar those kids were.

There is evil in the world, though, make no mistake.  Take cats, for instance.  Cats are evil. Don't get me wrong, I like cats.  I'm a cat person.  That's how I know that every evil furry one of them has some dormant or not so dormant Devil DNA.  Just look into their eyes, or listen to their almost human cries in the night.  It's there.  If you don't believe me just check out these cats that look like Hitler, especially this one.

Evil.

Are you sure you want to enter an argument with the Family First types, armed only with logic and sense.

If I were you, I'd grab a strawman and some "won't someone please think of the children".

Just to be safe, pack some "It's PC gone mad" and a good supply of "an erosion of good Kiwi family values".

Then, and only then, will you have a fighting chance.

Nice blog, btw.

This new TV show IS filth; it's true rape etc is going on right at this moment, but why the heck would I want to subject myself to seeing such harmful and disturbing images? If people want to see a show that has drug-taking, vomit, violence, rape, and on top of that, shows disrespect to the church, put it in the video shop, where people can consciously choose to rent it and pay for it. Not having it on the telly where anyone, no matter the age, can push a button and have it right there.

Cats are evil - agree. My very sweet innocent one year old kitten just became a mummy to four very sweet innocent kittens. One look into their bright wide eyes though, and I can tell they are purely thinking of ways to rid the house of humans. If they could work out how to use the can opener, my days would be numbered.

As for Californication. Probably won't watch it, but only because it's on opposite something else I like to watch. As we've seen with this blog over the last week or so there are many different things that annoy many different people, and everyone needs something to whine about. Let the nay-sayers whine about Californication and maybe they'll leave more important subjects alone for the rest of us to deal with.

When will the church realise that they are the ones giving these shows all the bloody publicity? If they just shut up, most people wouldn't even know about it!?

Naomi - "pushing a button" requires a conscious decision also. People can choose not to watch programmes that offend them just as freely as I choose not to watch Benny Hinn and his other god botherer cronies who offend ME.

Anna - once again our opposable thumbs (and ability to open canned goods) save us from destruction.

On the other subject - does the fact that I like a bit of sex, violence and bad behaviour in my entertainment make me a sicko? If I am then I think I'm in good company.

I have watched the whole series. It is great. Funny, clever, well writen. If the sermons were half as good, the churches wouldn't be empty.

Oooh - some juicy comments here. A nice welcome back after a couple of days off with following a nasty tooth extraction (evil? you don't know the half of it!)

It is really weird. There are those of us who are quite comfortable watching sex and violence and drug-taking. We see it and will react in a number of ways: it is cathartic; it is just a show; gosh that's bad - I am glad I am not in that situation; gee - there are a lot of people who are affected by this - I am going to do something and volunteer to help them; and so forth.

And maybe the show is filth. Does that make it bad? Maybe. Does it make it evil? Only if you let it suck your soul out and let it be cast into the fiery pits of hell for all eternity bwa ha ha haaaaa.

For all those people who are so concerned for our spiritual well-being that they want to stop these sorts of shows, I would only say this: Take the same sort of zeal and apply it to the rape and murder and domestic violence happening right in front of you. Apply it to the genocide happening all around the world. Apply it to all those who have had their human rights violated and are "disappeared".

You want real evil - just look around you.

Now, I don't want to bring everyone down. There is great beauty and magic and incredible compassion all around you too. But my message is that first deal with the real evil in the world, then deal with the pretend evil.

Hey I have seen this show.. it is the best show on TV.. no rape at all (consensual sex with a 16 year old. Last I checked that's legal in NZ not America tho) .. lots of nudity and swearing.

Intelligent scripts.. will keep you on your seat. The characters are all realistic types.

I think people should just exersise their right to not watch it.. rather than try to stop everyone watch it.. all they are really doing is advertising it more..

Also I agree, cats are evil, but they just need to get rid of all the dogs before peoples.
