Imagine I have legs

Last updated 09:35 04/03/2010

On Tuesday of this week I wore jeans to work and left my wallet at home.  These two things aren't particularly related to each other except that together they created a situation later in the day that caused me to wonder about the nature of man. And when I say "man" I actually mean those of you with a Y chromosome, rather than the whole of humanity.

As I said, I wore jeans to work (when I was fifteen my career ambitions stretched no further than having a job where jeans-wearing was allowed - so rock star, video store clerk or...rock star were pretty much the only vocations I was interested in, but anyway, well done me for fulfilling that life's ambition) and due to the leaving behind of my wallet, at lunchtime I had to walk home and retrieve it in order get lunch.

The short walk was uneventful but when I got home I found a package on my doorstep, a black knee-length pencil skirt I'd bought online a few days beforehand (how many of these could I possibly need?  Apparently as many as can fit in my house...). Because it had become warm and because there is nothing I like more than new things, I changed out of the jeans and into the skirt. There's nothing makes a gal feel like a star as much as a slightly unnecessary costume change.

So back to work, via the cafe it was. And then I became aware that something had changed. At the corner waiting for the lights to change, a guy in a ute checked me out. While walking across said crossing, it seemed, and I could have been imagining it, that a bloke sitting outside the cafe gave me the visual once over. Five minutes later a car full of boys tooted and yelled something unintelligible (seriously boys, do enunciate. If we can't understand what you're saying, then how can we be impressed by how witty and smooooth you are?). It was because of the skirt. It was because of the legs.

Now understand, I'm not telling you this story to be a skite it's just that it stood out for me quite strongly - walking along street in jeans = no particular reaction from passing menfolk. Whereas walking along street in skirt = men paying attention. I've always been amused when similar things have happened in the past as it seems to imply a lack of imagination of the "I didn't realise she had legs until I saw them" variety. And it seems not to gel given the innate ability most men have to picture the object of their desire in a state of nudity...or is this just a myth? Has anybody else noticed this apparent discrepancy?

So what do you reckon lads, is it fair to say you only notice the legs when they're "out"? Or ladies have you noticed different levels of attention being paid on the basis of one small change? Is there a female equivalent of this? (I think there might be and I think it might have to do with seeing a man's...car, but I kind of hope I'm wrong about that)

In other news, if you'd like to see me on the telly tomorrow (I'm not sure if my legs will be visible, but rest assured they WILL be attached) then do check out Sunrise tomorrow morning. But what shall I wear? Jeans or skirt, jeans or skirt?

have noticed the same thing, also the fascination with boots - which really doesn't make that much sense as you're more covered up when you add boots..??

I can honestly say I dont try and picture "objects of my desire" naked. There is something kind of creepy about that. I can certainly appreciate a woman clothed, and I guess sometimes what they are wearing can make a difference. Cleavage for example, is always an attention getter. And as i am not an expert on female fashion, i am not sure what a pencil skirt is....or how long/short they are, but I would assume that it must be no longer than knee high? Anyway, the point i am getting to is this. Men are all different, and some men love seeing legs, some love seeing boob showing, or at least in a tight top, some love jeans...especially tight ones. So whatever it is that shows off what you have Moata...I say go with it. I still have no explanation for guys in cars yelling out though....not something I drive around doing sorry!

Of course - skirts ALWAYS look better than jeans or pants on women, more shoudl wear skirts more often.

@ n #1 - I cant explain it, but boots do it for me too.....but not all of them. Only the pointy heels, just below the knee ones. Not the ankle boots, or the baggy ones, or ones with a flat heel. I have no explanation sorry. And you are right, it is covering up more, which makes it even stranger...something for me to go away and ponder.......

I've noticed the same thing on the rare occasions when I wear skirts. There are certain gentlemen in my building who give me a BIG smile whenever I wear pencil skirts. I can't understand it, because even I have to admit my legs are really not my greatest asset. Mr Louisette appears to cherish his memories of the times when I used to wear minis, back when I was a teenager and didn't know how awful I looked in them. In his case I guess love is blind, but I don't see where the others are coming from.

I think the female equivalent (for me anyway) is skinny jeans on a nice pair of male legs. There's nothing like a hot dude in tight pants.

In other news, thanks for the heads up about Sunrise. I don't normally watch it, due to a combination of me being at work when it's on and not being interested in it usually, but since you're appearing I will set the PVR.

Obviously the skirt must be a good one.

Either that, or you forgot to zip it up on your walk back to work.

It's quite simple really - if men catch a glimpse of something we find attractive about the opposite sex (or same, for those who do), we will look. Women do as well :-)

Can someone please explain what a pencil skirt is, so i know what we are talking about? haha. Or send a link to a picture of one?

@ The_Fridge I disagree.. being a woman who does not have skirt legs I only look good in a skirt if I wear some serious heels to lengthen and slim my legs or my knee high boots (blames genetics). Peep toes and pumps are not nearly as stable as my ankle boots which I wear under jeans and black pants and much more uncomfortable.

Fortunately all eyes are drawn to my chest as opposed to my legs..

Alas pencil skirts don't really work for me.. they just scream.. that girl has huge child bearing hips!!

Nope, never noticed a thing. And I wear a just-above-knee-length skirt and high heels everyday, and I'm a averagely-proportioned size 12.

My business in CBD Wellington, where the dress standard is high, and I'm often out on Lambton Quay and the Terrace.

Nada. Nil. Zilch.
