A slightly stinky best friend
BY SALLY FRENCHMy daughter has a very special new friend. It's not one of the many adorable toddlers from her new daycare, a friend's child, a cousin or even a neighbour - it's her black and white toy cat.
She's slept with the cat ever since she was tiny. I could see the friendship flourishing over the last six months, but today was the first time I noticed just how tight the bond had become.
We went to the supermarket and as I got her out of her carseat she kept clinging to the cat. I tried to prize it off her but there was just no way.
So kitty made his supermarket debut, sitting high in the trolley with Emma, every now and then being lifted up to her cheek for a sneaky cuddle.
Now if there was a cuteness scale, I'd say that right there would have easily been a 9.5.

Emma, 13 months old, has become more attached to her teddy since starting part-time daycare last week.
Apparently children have comforters as it helps to make them feel safe. They associate the teddy, doll, blanket or dummy with the people and places that make them feel the most secure.
The girls at daycare have also commented on the special bond Emma has with her reasonably sized pet toy cat. I am sure any day now she's going to come up with her own special name for it too.
My husband gave the toy to me when our pet cat died, six months before Emma was born and to be honest I though Emma would have chosen one of her cuter and colorful toys as her favorite - but that wasn't to be. Not even one of the others comes a close second.
The cat is already well worn, with matted fur, crusty string whiskers and a worn out label all smelling of slightly stale milk. I am terrified to wash it in case it ends in tears.
I was chatting to a friend who knew someone who imported a replica toy from overseas when their toddler was inconsolable after losing theirs.
And I also have a friend who wanted to smash down the door of a daycare one night to get her son's teddy after realizing at his bed time that it was left behind.
My little brother carried a pillow around for a long time as his comforter, and my husband said he used to have a bunny he'd drag around by its ears.
So what about you? Does your child have a favorite comforter, or maybe you had one as a child? What was it, and what was its name?

My wee girl has a Heffalump, which, much like the toy cat, started to smell. You're best bet is to put the toy in a pillow case and knot the end, whack it in the machine on a gentle cycle and let it dry in the sun. Works a treat!
My eldest son (who's nearly 8!) still sleeps with his stuffed lamb named Baa and cuddles with it on the sofa. Younger son (5) has a brown teddy bear, not quite as attached. I was never a cuddly toy person so this behaviour slightly mystifies me but I roll with it. One thing I am grateful for is that both cuddlies are machine washable. They get very stinky. You can't fight it, just embrace it. I will leave them to decide when to give them up (if they don't fall apart first). After all, how many guys leave home with their cuddly toys?
I still have my bunny. Of course between me, the wife and two cats there's no room for soft toys in the bed but he is a special toy that sits on the shelf.
My son - 19months has recently become attached to a bear he got given when he was born. Again its not the cutest of his toys, and we call it 'fat bear' A round blue bear with a night cap on. He loves the night cap and sticks it up his nose and sucks on it when he loses his dummy. Every time he hops into bed its the first thing he grabs. Its so adorable sneaking in to see him before we go to bed and he's cuddling fat bear with all his might - so so so cute!!!!
I had my blankie. I loved that thing. I'd suck my thumb and rub the satin edge on my cheek. Mum had to re-edge it as it got smaller and smaller and more worn out. I was devastated when it couldn't be resurrected any more.
And then, when I was at uni, I found THE SAME BLANKET at an op shop.
I, um, bought it. "For my future kids", of course. Not that I've let them use it.
When i was little someone gave me A G Bear and he has been my friend for life, i took him everywhere when i was a kid and i slept with him most nights right up until embarrassingly when i started having sleep over boyfriends and eventually moved in with my husband!! He used to be white but hes now grey from all the years of love and hes got no nose or talking box which used to be in his back but i still love him and i am now 24 weeks pregnant and hope my baby will love him too!
I never had one as a kid, and when my one makes her arrival (any day now...) I will be tying very hard to ensure that she doesn't get attached to one either.
My brother had a blankie (my pink cot blanket) which he carried everywhere. It was revolting, smelt bad and then when he left it behind overseas the dramas went on for weeks!! So i'll be keen to avoid that!
Having said that, I have replaced my dogs toy fox 7 times now... so i'm all talk but a total softy!
I still have Rabby Bunnit my grandmother gave me when I was 3. My mother keeps saying she’ll throw him out and when she says that I get very sad and tell her not to, so he just lives in the drawer, hiding. I’m 42 years old.
Awww cute pic!! My son has a monkey named George and they are best friends! My son can't go to bed without him!!
It's easy to pry them apart when 'George' needs washing because we tell our son that George needs a bath so he watches him in the washing machine (it's got a window on the lid, OK?!) and then we chuck him in the dryer. Our son keeps a close eye on George throughout the process but it's cute!!

My son (now almost 8) had an Elmo and toys design pillow from around 6 months old, originally intended to be made as a draft stop, which he loved to bits. I found the printed fabric at a store and sewed it up, which was very fortunate as I was able to make three. He had one at home, one at creche, and a spare for when one was being washed. It was amazing, if he was crying cuddling Elmo would calm him instantly (even the creche staff commented on it). Eventually they all fell to bits and ended up in the rubbish but he found other soft toys to be his best friend. We all still remember Elmo with fondness.
