What gets you on the D-Floor?
Happy Friday! You look lovely today by the way. Now, just before we swing into this week's awesome Casual Friday Five questions, I would just like to do a blog shout out to my Dad. Last night his work held a dinner in Dad's honour to celebrate him reaching the thirty-year milestone with the company. Thirty years! That's a very long time to be doing one job - my whole life in fact. I was born in January 1979, Dad started with the company that August and has been there ever since.
So, Dad, congratulations, I love you and I'm proud of you.
Right, now that the sentimental stuff is out of the way, let's do this Casual Friday Five thing, shall we? Yes, yes we shall.
1) What's your dream house? What does it look like, what facilities does it have, and where would it be? (submitted by Louisette)
Oh boy, you know I've been thinking about houses a bit lately. And when I say "a bit", I actually mean all the flippin' time. My dream home changes on a daily basis, but today I'm feeling like a nice solid homestead on a big country section would do very nicely thanks. It would have vines climbing the walls, be made of brick with wooden window/door frames, and have a big open fireplace in the lounge.
Also, there would be a bubbling brook, heaps of mature trees, and of course plenty of room for the dogs to go nuts. Look, I could go on all day detailing everything about dream home du jour, but I think you get the idea.
2) What is the one song that will get you on the D-floor every time? (submitted by Elsie)
Ha. Okay, I have two. The first is the one that often comes up at 50th birthday parties and also weddings (but only well into the night when all the older folk are a bit tipsy) - Come on Eileen by Dexy's Midnight Runners. I love it when everyone stands around in a circle at the slow bit, stamping their feet and clapping their hands, gradually picking up pace with the music until it kicks back into the chorus. What? Why are you looking at me like that?
The second song I can't resist is Flo-Rida ft. T-Pain Low - Every. Damn. Time.
3) Do any workplaces still actually have a Casual Friday? (submitted by Karlos)
Friday's are a bit special around my workplace. Everyone gets slightly giddy with the onset of the weekend and things are just a wee smidge more upbeat and relaxed. You may know that I work at a record company, so there's always lots of music being played any given day of the week, but come Friday? Well, something happens that we've lovingly termed "Freaky Friday" (wow that sounds lame). Basically, the songs get a bit weirder and the volume gets a bit louder... I know, madness.
We also have drinks and snacks at 4pm every Friday - it's the highlight of my week. I'm so easily excited by chips and dip, it's ridiculous.
4) Have you ever bought anything off an infomercial and did it do everything it promised? (submitted by Megs)
For a while I was addicted to TVSN (Television Shopping Network) - the Australian one that would play out after midnight on I-can't-remember-which-channel. I became very fond of a presenter called Karen Ledbury, who nearly succeeded in selling me the Muster hair straightening irons many a time. However, it wasn't the Muster but some hair-removal wax (reusable!) that I ended up purchasing from TVSN. It looked incredible on the infomercial, and yeah it worked, but all the effort and mess involved meant I only used the stuff a couple of times before shelving and eventually binning it. Which is good, because GROSS.
5) What's the one thing that has to be on the table for it to be a real Christmas dinner? (submitted by AT)
I'm a bit traditional so for me there has to be turkey, cranberry sauce, fresh veges, bubbles, and for dessert steamed pudding and trifle. Plus Christmas crackers and some big old Christmas candle encircled with plastic holly that Mum pulls out every year. Speaking of Mum, she's been making noises about having a BBQ for Christmas this year. Noises which I am choosing to ignore. I mean, BBQs are great, sure, but that's just not how the Yees do Christmas, y'know? She's going to read this and get pissy with me, I know it.
Okay you lot, get amongst it! This week has thrown up some excellent questions (thanks to all who submitted), so I will be very disappointed if you don't play along. Thank you and have an amazing weekend, okay?

bye bye
1) What's your dream house? What does it look like, what facilities does it have, and where would it be? In the 'burbs, two storeys, massive deck. Room for a tramp and a bbq outside, and a big rumpus room for wind trainers, an erg and a treadmill. A secret room or a dumbwaiter would satisfy my inner 8 year old. Oh- and bay windows, window seats and a turret of some sort.
2) What is the one song that will get you on the D-floor every time? Come on Eileen, Livin on a Prayer, Why Does Love Do This To Me... and so many more. The better question is what will send me OFF the dance floor... (not much)
3) Do any workplaces still actually have a Casual Friday? We do, but with a no-jeans policy so it's a little redundant.
4) Have you ever bought anything off an infomercial and did it do everything it promised? Winsor Pilates. I didn't use it quite as often as I should, or stick to the recommended 1300 calorie diet, but it was pretty good.
5) What's the one thing that has to be on the table for it to be a real Christmas dinner? Trifle!
Why thank you, you're looking lovely today too!
1 - Dream house... oooo there's this place that was for sale about a month ago not far from here, on the edge of Lake Wakatipu, in a gated community, with a swimming pool and tennis court and games pavillion and about 5 bedrooms and 2 living areas. That came pretty close. The one thing non-negotiable in my dream house (or houses) is a fireplace or wood burner and views, and a bit of green stuff to look out on.
2 - I'm ashamed to admit "Dirrty" would have to be one of those songs. I even do a little car-seat-dance to it if it ever happens to play whilst I'm driving. Old school it would be "Blame it on the Boogie"
3 - We have a casual-every day here. It's Queenstown, if I turned up in a suit to a meeting I'd be the only one, and everyone else would be in Jeans.
4 - Never bought anything off an infomercial
5 - (Yay! Thanks for using my question!) My family has of late been doing the BBQ thing but I am with you Jane, it's just not Christmas. When I've hosted in the past I've gone traditional with a turkey and/or ham (we did both for our mid winter christmas, the glazed ham was in the hooded BBQ!) and I think that's the way I'm going to go this year too. Hubby has made a special request for trifle, which I've never really liked or made so will have to phone his mum for a recipe. I'll be doing Pav with cream and strawberries though, that's definitely a Christmas tradition for us.
1) What's your dream house? What does it look like, what facilities does it have, and where would it be? I was watching Grand Designs last night (Kevin McLeod is my older man crush) and this woman was building a regency style house which I loved. Bay windows, grand rooms, sweeping staircases. I also like huge kitchens and bathrooms (claw foot tub). I also want a stone tower (like in The Bone People by Kerry Hume), but as it is not really in keeping with the style, perhaps that could be somewhere else on the property. I would build this house in my favorite place in NZ, which is North Taranaki. Up on the hills above the cliffs with a view of the sea to the west. Best sunsets, every time.
2) What is the one song that will get you on the D-floor every time? Being a bit of a four to the floor junkie, I'd have to go with 'Night of the Jaguar' - Safri Duo and Derrick Carter playing anything, playing live.
3) Do any workplaces still actually have a Casual Friday? Yep, where I work has casual Friday and Friday drinks at 4pm. Due to the recent financial situation, it is a little more low key than it used to be but still a good time to eat cheese and catch up after a hard week at work.
5) What's the one thing that has to be on the table for it to be a real Christmas dinner? I live in a different country than the rest of my family, so traditional Christmases have fallen by the wayside in the last couple of years, but I would have to say that for it to be a 'proper' christmas, I need a gigantic ham, and pavlova for dessert. Now Christmas for me means 'orphans and jews' and we all bring stuff so it can be a bit random, which is fun. Last year we went to a park by the beach for a picnic and someone brought a whole goose! It was delicious. This year I'm going to go to Glebe fish markets and buy loads of prawns, scallops, oysters and smoked trout. YUM!
1. As an interior design fiend, this question has got me all hot and bothered! My dream house would be an old villa on the beachfront. It would have an enormous verandah and a generous section. The colour scheme would be varying shades of white.
2. Ahaha, I'm not sure why, but "Apple Bottom Jeans" really does it for me.
3. No! Our workplace does not even have casual weekends.
4. While I've never bought anything from an infomercial, I've been very tempted lately by the Windsor Pilates ads. Gimme buns of steel! Now!
5. We're more of a Christmas breakfast type of family, so it'd have to be croissants, ham and (the good) champagne. YUM.
1/ Dream house - In the country with lots of land and a view of mt taranaki 2/ the one song to get me on the dance floor would have to be blister in the sun or basically any song that i know the words to once have had a couple 3/ we dont have casual friday but fun friday with lollies and a quizze ( competive bunch ) 4/never brought from informercial 5/ one thing to have on the table for a real christmas dinner is ham and new potatoes mmm and trifle for pudding mmmmm, cant wait !!!
Why thank you Jane; you look nice too. Congrats to your dad!
CF5.1: It'd be a villa. A renovated one with insulation and good heating. It would have a decadently large spa pool, because I am totally in love with spas, and it would have a huge section with lots of native trees in which would live lots of native birds. It would also have an enormous shed.
CF5.2: Only one thing ever gets me on the dance floor and that's not a song. It's liquor. Enough liquor to float a battleship is the quantity required.
CF5.3: My workplace does casual Friday; most government departments do, unless you work for Minister Pansy Wong. She doesn't believe in casual dress.
CF5.4: No, never. Mostly because I can't stand infomercials, but also because I can't imagine that anything I might buy from an infomercial would do everything it promised.
CF5.5: New potatoes. Ideally home grown ones, but that's not always possible of course. Ham and turkey are important too (largely because I don't usually eat ham or turkey), but for me there's something special about new potatoes.
1) What's your dream house? What does it look like, what facilities does it have, and where would it be?
Nice big huge penthouse apartment right in the centre of the city, with a ridiculously large deck and bedrooms, and a stand alone bath and floor to ceiling windows and a big, ultra modern kitchen. Of course, I'll have a country estate too that will be a big old manor with traditional interior, and a bach by some beach...I clearly am going to have to either win the lottery or marry someone rich.
2) What is the one song that will get you on the D-floor every time?
Most songs...I love to dance, as does most of my family. I am pleased/slightly embarrassed to report that we are generally the ones to get the dance floor started at any given event (even if a dance floor wasn't really intended), as well as the ones that have to be forced off it at the end of the night.
3) Do any workplaces still actually have a Casual Friday?
I'm not sure. Mine seems to but I usually just wear whatever I want most days, as I am a casual worker and thus invisible to most regulars. It has its upsides..
4) Have you ever bought anything off an infomercial and did it do everything it promised?
I haven't but I am mighty tempted by this laser hair removal thing I keep seeing on Good Morning. I really should stop watching Good Morning, its having a terrible impact on my ability to act as though I am younger than 75
5) What's the one thing that has to be on the table for it to be a real Christmas dinner?
Turkey and ham and cranberry sauce and plenty of wine and crackers. I don't like any Christmas desserts so its all about the main course for me
1) My ideal house would be a ten car garage with an attached big screen TV room. Also a moat to keep out the peasants.
2) The only thing to get me on the dance floor would be wild horses. Not the song, actual horses to drag me there kicking and screaming.
3) We do indeed have casual Friday, and I am happily wearing jeans instead of the boring black trousers.
4) I've not seen an infomercial with hot naked chicks, so therefore have abstained from any purchase of the infomercial nature.
5) A must have for the Christmas dinner would have to be roast spuds. Any sort of meat to accompany them is fine, also any sort of pudding. But the spuds should be a constant.

1) What's your dream house? What does it look like, what facilities does it have, and where would it be? In the country with some land and outbuildings for horsey things. Nice big kitchen with storage and counter top space, home theatre room, sauna, spa and nice outdoor area for entertaining.. not too posh, warm earthy colours inside.
2) What is the one song that will get you on the D-floor every time? Nothing will get me to dance if I am not already sozzled otherwise I cannot resist bon jovi.. no particular song.
3) Do any workplaces still actually have a Casual Friday? I and a number of workmates are wearing jeans as we post.
4) Have you ever bought anything off an infomercial and did it do everything it promised? Nope can't say I have. My sister has a magic bullet (the kitchenware kind) though and it is awesome.
5) What's the one thing that has to be on the table for it to be a real Christmas dinner? Chocolate Mousse. Not sure if that counts as dinner as its really dessert we're a dessert family.. flan, mousse, cheesecake.. anything really.
