Things that go bump in the night

Pet cemetaryAs a young thing, I scared very easily. My older sisters exposed me to movies like Nightmare on Elm Street, Poltergeist, and Carrie at an age far too tender to differentiate reality from fiction. They scared the living crap out of me.

Even as I grew older, I still hated horror movies. I recall being around eleven or twelve and watching Pet Sematary at my older sister's friend's house. I got so freaked out that I excused myself part way through the movie and ran home, trying not to vomit along the way.

I didn't go near the family cat for quite some time after that.

Of course being a total wuss is not a good look so I would pretend to dismiss scary stories told by torchlight at slumber parties, but after everyone else had fallen asleep I would lie awake turning those stories over in my head. What if someone really did kill that little girl's dog and then lick her hand while she lay in bed so that she wouldn't realise her dog's head was nailed to the lounge wall? Meanwhile she assumed that the sound of blood dripping from the dead dog's mouth was the kitchen tap... and, holy crap, is that dripping I can hear right now?

Given that I was (let's face it, I still am) such a girly blouse, you can imagine just how petrified I was when I had my own ghostly experience as a wee kidlet.

Are you ready for this? Because I'm not really, but anyway, here goes.

My sister, Anna, and I used to share a room and one night I was awoken from a very deep sleep by the sound of her whimpering from her bed. I looked over and in the dim moonlight I could see her huddled into the corner and looking towards the door of our room. My eyes followed her gaze, and there I saw what it was that had made my older sister cower in fear. The silhouette of a highwayman.

Dun dun duuuuuun.

I'm talking a full black shadow wearing a cape and brimmed hat. He just stood there, being a silhouetted ghost thing.

I can't remember what we did next, probably screamed for our parents who no doubt rushed in, turned on the light, and scared away our be-cloaked friend. I actually don't think my sister and I have ever talked about that incident, and perhaps I completely made up the memory (if you know what I mean) but the whole scene is still very vivid to me.

Years later, when I was about twenty, I thought the highwayman had returned for a one-off visit but it turned out to be a friend with big hair standing in the open doorway with the hallway light shining behind him.

On the whole, I'd have to say I don't believe in ghosts and the like, and I suppose I've written off the highwayman thing as being the result of a trick of the eye, or an overactive imagination. Then again, perhaps I tell myself these things because I simply can't deal with what it would mean if my experience had been real. How do you feel about the paranormal? Any ghostly encounters you'd like to share? How about classic scary stories you heard as a kid? Ooo, this is going to get creepy.

UPDATE: I just texted my sister to see if she remembered the highwayman, and SHE TOTALLY DOES!

Everyone looks at me sideways when I mention that my worst nightmares were inspired by Edward Scissorhands! The movie was fine actually, but the next night after the slumber party, I noticed a shadow on my bedroom wall looked just like his scissor-fingers coming around my door frame. Turns out it was just the shadow cast by a tree, but it totally ruined the movie for me!

Ooooo scary! I believe in ghosts after weird experiences at an old house my friends used to flat in. One time there were 2 of us in the kitchen making a coffee and both of us heard what sounded like a child and an adult having an argument in the bedroom - only problem was we were the only 2 in the house. We thought that it was just some weird sound bouncing effect coming from the neighbours, but there didn't seem to be anyone around at the time. A few days later the cat was sitting in that same bedroom just staring at the wardrobe for ages, when all of a sudden it started hissing and going nuts the way they do when they see another cat. It ran out after that and hardly ever went back into that room! My friend who had that room spent a lot more nights on the couch after that.

One of my first flats was on top of an old derelict carpark building in town which you had to walk down a not very well lit alleyway to get to and up an intimidating staircase with dim lighting. After living there a while we convinced ourselves there was a poltergiest inhabiting it who watched us as we walked home and into the bathroom at night (as bathroom was right at the top of the staircase you couldn't help but look down it). I also used to be terrified when i was younger at night after watching the goonies that the creepy looking guy would be beside my bed if i took my head out from under the covers.

I have watched a slew of horror movies over the years and been ok I am to dismiss it as mindless entertainment.

No real paranormal experiences although a few very odd dreams featuring the recently deceased even one hanging out with a friend who had recently passed and he started crying when I asked why? he said "it’s because we can’t hang out after you wake up"..

I don’t know how I would handle seeing a ghost probably be petrified.

I don't beleive in ghosts myself, but that doesn't make creepy shadows and creeky noises in the middle of the night anymore comfortable!

I'm a total sceptic (but I love horror movies and scary stories) don't believe in any of it really... except for this one time...

Not sure if ghosties exist; I tend to try to find a rational explanation for everything, even when I had this horrible experience a few times where it felt like someone was sitting beside me on my bed while I was lying in it trying to get to sleep. I swear I actually felt the bed move just like someone sat their weight on it! That was hard to rationalise, I just convinced myself I was imagining things.

As a kid I used to get freaked out by Rolf Harris in the old paints ad; I think it went "Trust British paints - sure can!" or something like that. It had his head poking through this circle and he used to do this beat on a drum. Man, that used to give me the heebie jeebies. Every time it came on I'd either run screaming from the room or grab the first cushion to hide behide.

Absolutely love scary movies though! If anyone has got some tips for really good ones I'd be keen to hear them.

Eek.. I can totally relate to the scary (haha) horror jokes that were being told.

I had forgotten about the stark raving mad serial killer that broke into the old ladys house and nailed her dog to the bathroom wall. Each time the lady went to check the banging, she'd put her hand under the bed and the 'dog' would lick her hand. And the end sentence "written beside the dog were the words "humans can lick too"...AAAARGH!!!

Great to hear there are so many different versions of it. I have to say, I got a dog about 5 months ago - he's a big boy now and occasionally likes to sleep next to my bed at night. It freaks me out because the first thing I think of is that stupid joke and then I get tempted to dangle my hand over the side and see what happens!

My mother was fantastic at sewing. And she passed away quite a few years ago. I went to use my sewing machine, and it got to the stage when I walked away I had to switch it off, as the machine would start sewing on its own. I took it in for a service finally last week, and nothing wrong with it.

After a marriage split, I was living in a small unit on my own. Majority of appliances were new, including my electric jug. I used to get home after work, slide open the ranch door and before I stepped in the door, the jug would start boiling in the kitchen. Then I often would wake in the mornings, and then hear the jug boiling away. I could never leave the damn thing empty, and always had to have water in it.

Steps out of thread to music from The Twilight Zone playing !!
