Asleep on the job

Last updated 12:56 08/02/2010

sleepyI can't do it. I can't pretend that I'm not overwhelmingly tired. I'm not sure if I'm exhausted from an intense weekend or if it's just because I had a terrible night's sleep (involving some fairly active dreaming), but whatever it is I can barely keep my eyes open.

Staring at this computer screen isn't helping any, but I do these things for you.

Of course, feeling a bit dozy as I sit in front of a computer and roll out a blog entry is one thing, but having your eyelids start to droop as you're driving to work in the morning is something else entirely. I'm sure most of you have experienced the weird warmth of oncoming slumber gradually enveloping your senses on a late-night drive home, but to have it happen in the morning when you're supposed to be bright and fresh? Well that's just all kinds of wrong.

I suspect this latest bout of exhaustion is the result of a combination of things. For a start, I had quite a full-on week at work last week. Then, as mentioned, it was a pretty busy weekend as well. Yesterday was Joel's birthday and so Saturday involved whizzing around to sort out presents and the like, as well as catching up with my sister, going out for a karaoke night with friends and then returning home in the wee hours to wrap the aforementioned presents.

Then my Sunday involved getting up early in order to prepare a full cooked breakfast for Joel, before taking off to do a couple of hours' work. Then we trotted off to a movie (Fantastic Mr Fox, which was brilliant in case you're wondering) and then home to entertain Joel's dad and bake a cake. After that it was out for dinner at a cute little Italian restaurant, and then home to put the finishing touches on the cake, bung in some candles, sing happy birthday, eat cake, and then collapse into bed and fall asleep (within moments).

Then it was full steam ahead with the crazy dreams... excellent.

I have felt like I've been living inside a pressure cooker for the last week, and I am now plodding around like a zombie. Only without the, you know, compulsion to eat people and stuff. Zombies eat people, right? I have no idea if that's accurate, perhaps they just bite people. Can you please clarify?

All this from a busy few days and a couple of nights of crappy sleep - I don't think I am equipped to ever have children. How on earth do you people do it?

And so we arrive at the end of the entry (which took quite some time to write thanks to my mashing the keyboard with my paws instead of touch-typing as I normally would). As always, I want something from you... your ever-helpful guidance. I'm not so keen on this nodding-off-at-the-wheel thing, so do you have any tips for keeping your life, and therefore your stress levels, under control? And what about bright ideas for waking one's tired ass up enough to just make it through the work day?

Loud music, or get out and walk around for 5-10mins getting fresh air. Keep your window down and take off your jumper if you have one on. Worst case scenario pull over and have a kip, at the end of the day being a bit late for work is better than not showing up at all due to being dead n all...

Do you eat breakkie Jane? I find if I don't have a decent breakfast I get sleepy too - lots of fresh fruit and grains, orange juice and coffee are a great start to the day. Never mind, only 4 hours till you can go home and have an early night :)

Im feeling a bit like a bicycle today as well (2 tyred) largely due to the neighbours (whose driveway is outside our bedroom window ) yelling for the kids to help them bring in the shopping then proceeding to do so in loud fashion Sat 6:30am and then loud music and singing Sun 7:00am no sleep ins for me.

Best Ideas for waking up, never ever snooze and have a loud alarm! Shower start off cold then gradually warm it up.

I'm not even partially awake unless i down a can of energy drink before 10am. Was driving to work one morning with a complete struggle to keep my eyes open and stopped at some traffic lights which were on a hill. I though i'd put the handbrake on so took my foot of the break only to roll slowly forward into the flash 4wd's tow ball in front of me. It didn't damage his car at all, it put a small dint in my front bumper, but being the typical arrogant 4wd driver he proceeded to abuse the s*** out of me for doing it and all i could do was blankly look and try to apologise, while attempting to stay awake. Mornings are not my thing.

Sip ice cold water constantly, not sure if it's the water or the fact you need to pee every ten minutes but it surely does work....back when I was a raver and simultaneously trying to hold down a 9-5, memories aye

sorry can't help ya there- I find my brain function only really starts to spark up around midday, and am often surprised to find myself showered, dressed, and sitting at my desk at work when this happens. I must have good internal auto-pilot or something.

Going to get myself a tall glass of ice cold water...

Avoid caffiene, drink lots of water and get some fresh air if you can.

Seems like you earned a bleary eyed Monday though - busy weekend all round. Happy Birthday to Joel too.

I'm with you, I don't know if I could ever cope with having children. That said, I can't remember the last time I slept right through the night without being woken up by the cat or my husband so maybe I'd do ok. I second the "drink lots of cold water" option. I also recommend keeping yourself busy at work - there's nothing to make me almost fall asleep like not having anything to do. Today I'm light on work so I'm doing all my filing. Otherwise I'd be asleep at my desk!

For life in general, I recommend routine. Go to bed at the same time each night, get up at the same time each morning, eat regularly (and good food). If you have too much to do, write a list and prioritise things. Don't stress about the stuff that isn't really important and don't stress yourself out doing stuff that others could do, or isn't going to be noticed (eg making a flash dinner when you have no energy, when you and Joel would probably enjoy meat and 3 veg just as much).

A bucket of coffee and walk around for several minutes to get the blood moving again. Then have a nice nap at your desk afterwards.

I'm currently in a semi coma state from getting very dehydrated in the warm weather yesterday, then having a sleep with multiple interuptions.
