To see or not to see

Last updated 13:56 17/02/2010

LBApologies for the late posting, you can blame Leroy for that. We had a spectacularly bad night with him last night.

Just before bedtime I discovered a poop oh so kindly deposited for us in the bedroom and then when I was trying to shoo him outside he proceeded to step in the mess and run it around the room.

Shortly after 4am the troublemaker struck again. This time he took exception to a hedgehog that had made its way onto our property, and oh, the noise. I have never heard such unholy sounds come out of Leroy's yappy little pie-hole. To our entire valley of neighbours - we are so sorry.

We relocated the hedgehog (and when I say "we" I mean "Joel") which solved the screaming-dog issue, but the damage was done. After that I couldn't get back to sleep for well over an hour, and then once I was happily slumbering away I most definitely did not want to wake up when my alarm went off. So I didn't.

Which meant there wasn't enough time before work to write you guys a love note, and so it is that the blog is going up in the afternoon.

Sorry Sir, the dog ate my homework etc, etc.

I didn't actually plan on writing about the world's most annoying bundle of black fluff, instead I'd like to discuss must-see movies. Last night I saw Minority Report for the first time. I didn't think CkI'd enjoy it whatsoever, but I was pleasantly surprised to find it was actually very good.

There are rather a lot of movies that I probably should have seen by now, but haven't. The thing is, I don't like the feeling of having wasted a couple of hours watching rubbish films (a la The Notebook) so unless there's something that really captures my imagination in the trailer, generally I'll give it a miss. Of course the upshot of that is I am probably missing out on some truly great films, which isn't really ideal.

My genius plan is to now use you guys as my movie panel. Below are some examples of movies I haven't seen, even though just about everybody else has. Please let me know if the following movies should be on my "To Watch" list or if I've done myself a favour by avoiding them so far...

  • Citizen Kane
  • Taxi Driver
  • Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
  • Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
  • The Shining
  • Schindler's List
  • Reservoir Dogs
  • Blade Runner
  • The Godfather
  • Rain Man

This is really just the tip of the iceberg, I can think of at least a dozen more but I don't want you to think I'm a complete movie n00b, so let's just start with these. Perhaps I'll 'fess up a few more as the discussion unfolds. Thanks in advance for your help, please also feel free to share any movies you're not sure about and perhaps we can help you in decision to see or not to see.

RE: Leroy and hedgehogs. I have this problem with my dog... the hedgehog ki!!er I call her. Unfrotuantely hedgehogs don't appear to learn that our garden is not the appropriate short cut, hence I have had to dispose of several bodies, or see them scuttling off while I pick quills out of my dogs face. Anyone got any tips to avoid this problem? PS I loved the Notebook... so won't bother to comment on the films as perhaps our tastes clash :)

Citizen Kane is a bit like morphine. The more you get, the number you feel. It's a good movie of it's time, but nowadays, totally irrelevant.

Taxi Driver - meh.

LOTR - It's a great excuse for a nap.

Schindlers list and The Rainman I can take or leave.

The others you definitely have to see. BladeRunner and The Shining are well worth the watch as are others. I've never been much of a fan of cartoon movies like Wall E and Up, but after having watched them, and appreciating the adult humour in them, I'm wondering what else there is.

Coraline was a damnably good movie too. Incredibly scary for anyone under 12 I would imagine.

When all else fails, I always use IMDBs top 100 movie list. That's the only list anyone should be using.

On top of those, The Princess Bride and Godfather 2.

Taxi Driver and the two LOTRs are definitely worth seeing, if only so you can say you have seen them. I haven't seen Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Gone With The Wind, An Inconvient Truth, Slumdog Millionaire, or any number of 'must sees', despite seeing movies at a prolific (one or more a week on a big screen) rate up until a few years ago.

DO NOT watch Citizen Kane unless you want to be bored to tears for what seems like an eternity. Or unless you have to analyse it in a media studies class. If you're going for pure enjoyment factor - I'd give it a miss.

Lord of the Rings x2 - I enjoyed these better than the first one, cos there's heaps more action. Two Towers is the best of the three in my opinion. ROTK has a little bit too much whiny Frodo and Sam..

The Shining- Yes! One of the best scary horror movies I've seen (admittedly I haven't seen many..) I usually hate horrors, but this one is less blood and gore horror and more creepy suspense.

I LOVE Blade Runner, and pretty much all movies based on Phillip K Dick novels. How can you beat Harrison Ford, Sean Young and Darryl Hannah in 80's-futuristic getup? It's pretty fantastic.

I'd see Taxi Driver, Schindlers List, the God Father and Reservoir Dogs.

I wouldn't bother with LOTR - I saw the second one tho and I enjoyed it more than the first but I still had no desire to see the last one.

If I could suggest one movie you must add to that, if you haven't yet seen it yet: Old Boy

My dog was up all night sick. ALL NIGHT. Swap you for Leroy! When my dogs go nuts at Hedgehogs I take what's left of their dinner (biscuits) and put it outside for the hedgehog. It drives them nuts, but poor hedgehogs!!

Schindlers list still makes me bawl my eyes out to this day (as does any Holocaust movie). Want to see Taxi Driver and Citizen Kane though.

Without knowing what sort of movies you love, it's really hard to say if you're going to like anything on that list.

What are a half dozen or so movies that you go totally nuts over?

Personally I really enjoyed the Lord of the Rings films (and bought the extra long versions), but the g/f can hardly even be in the same house as them. Yet she watches Shortland Street (the show that makes 30 minutes feel 6 months long).

See Schindler's List and Reservoir Dogs. The rest are okay but those two are brilliant.
