Less than you bargained for

Last updated 12:08 03/09/2010

I am trying to be a better grownup but sometimes I feel like the universe is conspiring against me - at least it seemed that way when I was prevented from being all Suzy Homemaker recently.

Over the last couple of years I'm sure you've noticed I've become more domesticated and boring mature. It started with all that talk about vacuum cleaners, and then I bought a dining suite, started thinking that a diet consisting of junk food alone might not be so wise, and... sorry what was that? Oh, yeah, I guess buying a house is a pretty grown-up thing to do. Even if we still giggle about the fact we're homeowners.

To round off the whole shut up, I am so a grownup thing I started baking. Among my experiments have been slices (louise, ginger, caramel), cupcakes, Belgian biscuits, scones, a banana cake or two and my specialty - lemon meringue pie.

Here are a few pics of treats I've made:

Coconut Ice

Cupcakes

Powderpuffs

Belgian

At the risk of sounding like something out of a Women's Weekly from 1967, I really enjoy baking and find it helps me unwind.

I can totally change a car tyre, by the way, just putting that out there.

But back to baking... or not, as it happens, because I haven't had a chance to work my magic in the kitchen, what with all that pesky real estate buying and subsequent house-moving carry-on.

Luckily, one of the chattels that came with our house was an oven - your run-of-the-mill freestanding number that has seen better days:

Oven

*Please note our delightful pink and grey lino, we are coping with it okay so far

The house was previously tenanted and there wasn't a lot of care given to upkeep of the oven (or cleaning in general, it would seem). But that was okay, I didn't need a fancy oven to throw together a lemon meringue pie for Joel's Dad's birthday dinner (that took place the weekend we moved in), as long as it did its job and got hot inside, I figured I'd get along with Old Oven just fine.

Given that there was food still encrusted around the cooktop elements and on all the outer surfaces of the oven, I figured I should probably give the inside a good wipe-down before getting under way. Smart idea, as it turned out, because while someone had the good grace to coat the oven with oven cleaner it seems they forgot about part two - the bit where you wipe it all off.

So there I was, trying to clean the oven so I could get on with some baking for Joel's Dad when a big chip of rust fell from above the grill. I poked my head inside for a closer look and this is what I saw:

Rusty!

And now a little closer for dramatic effect:

Gross, right?

So we've had to buy a new oven, and it arrived this morning - exciting. I mean, sure, it's annoying that one of the chattels that came with the house was completely useless to us, but just quietly I'm pleased because a shiny new oven is definitely a treat. Even if it is a very basic model; the purse strings have tightened somewhat thanks to Mr Mortgage, no more luxurious top-of-the-line stuff for us. Damn it.

Today I want to hear about the times when you've bought something, only to take possession and discover something seriously wrong with it.

Yum! And right on lunch time too! I love baking as well, though everything I make tends to be a flop (unless its cookies out of a box) :(

"take possession and discover something seriously wrong with it."

Hmm well i have this experiences wth a couple of guys in my life time :oP

anyway seriously.....

My friends oven (just renting the house) is out by 50 degrees and the agents wont replace it cause technically it works. Took her a while to figure out how much it was out by, she is a baker by trade so was not impressed at all.

Jane,

Can you please post your interview you did with John Toogood for c4 a few years back. That really candid good one. Unrelated to the blog topic. But please do this.

First time using my oven in the new house and the whole thing blew up. Was thankful it didnt take the house with it.

Within the first week at my new flat, the oven conked out and all I had left was the elements on top. Luckily, my landlord is awesome and bought me a brand new shiny one straight away. I feel kinda spoiled being a student with an oven made this century.

That pie looks so yum! Also the cupcakes are very cute.

That rusty line is a bit scary, I wonder if the tenants used the oven at all? Our oven in our rented place is oldish (maybe 1980's)but works well, nice and hot which is what matters.

How cool to get a new oven though??! Yay!

Yeah we had a disaster over at my last flat. It would randomly be 50 deg or so too hot or cold. Finally convinced the landlord to replace it and what does he do but buy a second hand one that was older than me which also didn't work, the man come out 3 times to look at it and said it was "fine" but that meant all our baking (4 girls all like to bake) failed for the rest of the time we lived there as could never judge what the oven was going to do next.

I am so in love with Belgian biscuits, and those examples look divine :-) *dribbles a little bit* And, even though this will sound more girly than a mobile-phone that is powered by nagging, I just love cupcakes - they're YUMMY.

I've been known to do some baking over the last couple of years. It was THAT, or get a wife, and the baking was cheaper (and quieter). Anyway, I've baked quite a few apple crumbles and chocolate cakes (with almond or peppermint icing). See, I AM in touch with my feminine side ;-)

I've started baking alot more in the last few months, I find it really relaxing too. Plus, delicious treats at the end of it!

The oven in my house (rented) exploded in spectacular fashion one night when I was cooking dinner, it blew a hole straight through the wok. Now, we have a lovely new oven which is much better for baking.
