Five for Friday - vegetable garden porn

Last updated 13:02 24/08/2012

It's a glorious day here in Wellington - still and sunny and perfect. Here's hoping it lasts till the weekend because I'm itching to get into the garden and plant some punga shrubs Kaye from Grow From Here has donated to me. Thanks Kaye!

All my reading about biodynamics has left my head spinning a little too much to actually write anything today, so here instead is some inspiration for the weekend. Bon jardinage.

This is the garden Thomas Jefferson built at this place in Monticello, but I doubt he actually got his hands dirty, he had slaves to do all that biz. Coupla hundred years on, and no slave labour later, it's real purdy, doncha think?

This is from an allotment created as part of the UK's landshare scheme, where landowners and those wanting some space to garden get together. I love this gate, it's like the entrance to a secret hideaway.

This is another glorious allotment. I love the allotment system because it's so fun to garden together, and I love the way the plots look together.

I've lost the link to the blog where this picture came from, but it was delightful - this picture is of corn growing in a front yard. The couple and their little daughter were walking to the grocery store, documenting all the space that was taken up with vegetable growing. There were tiny strips where veges flourished, and proved you don't need a tonne of space to grow at least some of your produce. Every little helps!

If you like your gardens a little more regimented, get a load of this kitchen garden at Pockerley Old Hall. I think I would find those hedges slightly irritating... but that's just me.

And if that wasn't enough garden porn for you, hop over to Woman vs Wild on Facebook for a picture of the ultimate kitchen garden.

That landshare scheme is so brilliant. and people have been so generous. Do you think it would work here in NZ. HFW is my hero

Best vege garden ever is on the Amalfi Coast - I think it was attached to an old convent, now a hotel. An incredibly steep site with every bit lovingly tended and utilised. Anyone who has been to Ravello, and walked out to the clifftop will have seen it. Magnifico.

Those gardens look lovely. Mine is very sad and neglected at the moment, sigh. I had surgery on my arm recently and so can't get out there till it's all healed and the bandages etc are all gone. So frustrating on a beautiful sunny day and when I can see the weeds creeping out and I am just itching to get in there and pull them out.

Garden porn - here I was thinking you'd written about flowers or plants having sex in public (which they obviously do!) or health issues ie hayfever caused by millions of male gametes (pollen) etc.

I would be so interested if anyone can explain why this is entitled porn? (Other than totally childish marketing, of course).
