Kennington went to the dogs during the weekend when the annual Southland Kennel Association annual all breeds championship show was held.

Southland Kennel Association spokesman John Green said the show featured 300 dogs in 70 breeds.

While the number was slightly down on last year, it was still a good turnout, with competitors travelling from throughout the South Island to take part, Mr Green said.

Dogs were judged on their appearance, conformation and performance.

Numbers in each breed varied, with Cavalier King Charles spaniels the largest group.

Other popular breeds were chihuahuas, weimaraners, golden retrievers, rough-coated collies and Tibetan spaniels.

Among the rare breeds on show were an Italian greyhound, griffon, and Dogue De Bordeaux.
