Wellington Zoo's newest dingo has been named by a TradeMe user, who paid $675 for the privilege.

The zoo's 11-week-old pup has been named Wolfrik by a Wellingtonian who won the naming rights on TradeMe under the user name CathMacL.

Wolfrik is a Germanic name which means "King of the Wolves", Wellington Zoo said.

Several witty comments on the site had suggested the dingo be called "Dingo Deans" after Wallabies coach and New Zealander Robbie Deans.

Others suggested "Bingo the Dingo" and "Ding-a-Ling".

The auction closed at 10pm last night.

The money will go towards breeding programmes at the zoo.
