Snowball home for Christmas

Last updated 22:56 16/12/2008

Snowball disappeared about six months ago and, after weeks of searching, she accepted that he was gone. But after living the life of a stray for six months, he was found by the SPCA.

He was then picked to feature in the charity's 12 strays of Christmas campaign in The Dominion Post, making his appearance yesterday as Leroy, a "handsome chap" searching for a new home.

"We thought he had found another home because he's so gorgeous and friendly," Kelsi's mother, Penny Davenport, said yesterday. "We had given up hope, but it's brilliant to have him back. It's like an early Christmas present."

The saga started when the family shifted about a kilometre to another house in Island Bay earlier this year. At first, Snowball seemed fine but, after a couple of weeks, he wandered off.

The family assumed he had gone back to their old house, but could not find him. The hunt was called off, leaving 15-year-old Kelsi devastated. "There were a few tears at the time, but now everyone is delighted to have him back," Ms Davenport said.

As soon as Kelsi saw the photo in the newspaper, she knew it was Snowball. "She just said, `Of course it's him, look at the ears,' so we had him at home by 10am.

"He will be getting a bit of tender loving care over the next few days and we will be keeping a close eye on him."

Glad he is back. After I moved, one of my cats got out, (not sure how, as we had the house secure so he wouldn't), anyhoo, after 6 days of him not coming home, I thought he was gone, but then he turned up. A little skinnier, but glad to see me none the less.

Hardly front page news

Amazed Kelsi recognised Snowball. We had the gloomiest evening imaginable after my wife found our cat lying dead at the roadside. I sadly gathered him up and buried him. The next morning she opened the back door and was surprised to find Chip miaowing for his breakfast as he always did each morning. We still don't know whose cat we buried.

I am so glad you found him...I lost one of my cats and it's terrible now knowing what happened to him.

Bah hum bug "Knife" - I think this is a lovely, heart-warming story perfect for this time of year and a great antidote to the doom and gloom of the economy/crime/performance of the Black Caps.

I'm so glad Snowball has been reunited with his family.

It's not the front page, it's a website. It is, quite appropriately, part of the lifestyle/cutestuff section.
