When their new robotic friend "dies", these monkeys console and hug each other as if it was their own.

A new nature show had viewers welling up when a group of monkeys mourned the death of a robotic baby.

Spy in the Wild, a documentary series by BBC, places cameras in fake animals to infiltrate their natural habitat and explore their emotions.

However, when a camera was placed inside a fake baby Langur in India, the pack of monkeys took it as one of their own.

Disaster strikes when a monkey picks up the robot and accidentally "kills" it by throwing to the ground.

The heartbroken monkeys react just as they do when their own babies die, hugging and consoling each other.

"A calm and contemplative mood descends on the colony," the shows narrator says.

"Quite accidentally, our spy creature is at the centre of something extraordinary, capturing emotions that have rarely been observed."
