Pets of the day: Junk food duo, Donut and Sir Dorito

Donut and Dorito doesn't sound like an obvious combination - but here, it works.

Donut and Dorito doesn't sound like an obvious combination - but here, it works.

We adopted Donut from the SPCA last April. Well, she chose us.

As we walked into a room with a few kittens in, I heard this little squeak of a meow. I looked down and there was this little tortoiseshell kitten staring up at me. I crouched down and she jumped on my knee, curled up in a little ball and purred loudly. I knew then that I had to have her.

We gave her the name Donut because my parents have a cat called Duncan - my sister said it would be like Dunkin' Donuts.

She's definitely a character. She knows what the words 'hungry' and 'dinner' mean and she growls really loudly when someone knocks on the door.

This year in May, we decided to get her a friend to keep her company. Both my partner and I had always wanted a ginger cat so we kept an eye out at the SPCA. One weekend we went and they had four ginger boys, one long-haired and three short-haired.

A week after Sir Dorito joined the family, these two were firm friends.

A week after Sir Dorito joined the family, these two were firm friends.

The long-haired boy came up to us purring very loudly and we knew we had to have him.

It took us a whole day to come up with his name and my partner insisted it should have a Sir in front of it. I looked up ginger cat names and saw Dorito - I thought we might as well stay with the food theme.

Donut wasn't happy with us at first and it took a few days to get used to his new sibling, but by the end of the first week they were best mates. They both sleep next to each other and clean each other.

Pets can be awesome for many reasons and we'd love to hear all about yours.
