Best & worst: CFDA Awards

THE BEST: I understand that this isn't going to be the populous choice, but I absolutely adore this terracotta Zac Posen on the gorgeous Greta Gerwig (it really makes her hazels pop). It's just different enough but still timeless. PS: She's channelling a young Catherine Deneuve - and that's obviously a very good thing.

THE GOOD, JUST: Blake Lively doesn't have to try hard to look fabulous, and I love the pink-sequins-on-green element of this Michael Kors dress, and the scalloped hem. But, with the hair, the hoops, the bangles, it almost looks like she's actually en route to the set of Mad Men rather than just paying homage to the Sixties.

THE WOW: Okay, so I had to search far and wide for appropriate photos of this dress, because it's entirely see through and Rihanna is basically naked underneath. Shimmery and nude, like something from an early 2000 Britney or J-Lo music video. This Adam Selman fishnet dress was made with over 200,000 Swarovski crystals, aka it must be crazy expensive, and it must have given someone serious RSI. I'm loving the face of the cop in the picture on the right. I dig the Josephine Baker vibe, but do wish this was slightly less sheer (trust me, there are worse photos). Bum and boobs all in one outfit is quite something. Also, granny-pant coloured knickers? If you're going to show it all off choose some nicer undies.

THE WEIRD: Is Lupes in culottes?! I like Lupita Nyongo's top here - paired with a nice pair of navy trou', I think it would look absolutely stunning ... but paired with matching awkward-length shorts it's just all a bit much. No one should ever wear shorts of this length. Just above your ankles, yes, but not mid-calf. Never. It's quite simple really.

THE GOOD: Heidi Klum always looks at her best when she doesn't try too hard, and this peach Donna Karan dress is somehow effortless and yet still very elegant. I love it.

THE GREAT: Alessandra Ambrosio looks A-grade stunning in this Noonoo gown. The crossover of material along the bodice gives the dress structure, and the red works beautifully with her chestnut hair.

THE GREAT: Hilary Rhoda manages to make a peach-pink, all-lace dress work with a red lip. That is some pro work right there. She's wearing J Mendel. Those brows. Wows.

THE GOOD: This is like something big sis Beyonce would wear: Solange's style is usually more patterned Miu-Miu, but this silver silk Calvin Klein is a nice change. I love the pink lip.

THE WEIRD: Marion Cotillard can pull off almost anything, yes, but here she actually looks like the retro angel my family and I put on the top of our Christmas tree every year (except she doesn't have the droopy eye our angel developed that year I left her too close to the fire). Why would you choose to drape random bunches of fabric from nipple to hip? Odd placement indeed.

THE GOOD: I love this purple colour on Bridget Moynahan - and I'm totally team Moyn' after how contained and gracious she was about the whole Tom Brady leaving her for Gisele when she was massively pregnant thing. This Lela Rose dress is beautiful, although I do wonder if the bodice could be 'hoiked' up a bit?

THE VERY HER: I do have a phobia of large hats, and I dislike this one (have you seen the Veep episode in which J-L-D wears a giant hat? This one's up there with that. It was Ray's fault). But, that said, this Christian Siriano gown is just plain beautiful, and Rocha's rocking the purple lip. Check out Chrissy Teigen pawing Rocha (who I think is mini Swinton).

THE MEH: Re-re-wind ... crimped hair, really?! I dig this green on Emmy Rossum, but the pleats on the skirt of this J Mendel gown + the crimped hair are all just a bit much. Flowy hair, softer shoes, and we may have had a win on our hands. Thoughts?

THE BAD: I thinks this Rosie Assoulin dress could work on Keri Russell if they'd just dialled back the volume of that green sash around her hip area. It's almost like she's carted a newborn to the event in some earth-mother, attachment parenting sling, and passed off the baby just before posing, just letting that sling drop.

THE GOOD: VS model Maria Borges manages to somehow pull off concurrent thigh split and low-cut top in this DVF. I think the gorgeous green of this dress helps. Oh, and the fact she's a stunning model.

THE MEH: Obviously Naomi Campbell looks stunning, but I'm getting a dated vibe from this Marc Jacobs Resort 2015 gown (dated and it's from NEXT year, that's quite a feat). I'm not sure who decided to put those eyelet things right at the chest of the dress, but I do not concur with their design decision.

THE GOOD: I love this laser cut out Marchesa dress on Sophia Bush. It's just interesting enough, and that side-swept wavy 'do complements the look perfectly. Oh, and, when in doubt, rock a red lip.

Every year the Council of Fashion Designers of America get together to recognise excellence in 'womenswear, menswear, accessories, journalism and creative vision'.

This year the evening womenswear designer of the year was Altuzarra, accessories designer of the year was The Row (Mary-Kate and Ashley) and the lifetime achievement award went to slick old Tom Ford. Rihanna, meanwhile, was presented with the Fashion Icon award (ironic given she practically pooh-poohed clothes on the night).

Check out the best and worst red carpet moments from the awards in the gallery above.
