Choosing the Emmys dress the hard part...
She's got the jewels, now for the dress...CHRISTINE WALSH
Mandy Cordobes continues her hunt to find a dress - maybe two - for the Emmys, but has turned up a real gem in Taranaki jewellery designer Keri Wanoa.
She put the call out for a Taranaki designer gown to showcase at the star-studded event, and snared the attention of Wanoa, who handcrafts Maori-inspired pounamu, acrylic and bone jewellery set in sterling silver.
Cordobes will be at the awards to support her husband, Richie Cordobes who has been nominated in the Outstanding Special and Visual Effects in a Supporting Role category for the television series, Mob City, episode A Guy Walks into a Bar.
Cordobes said she had been overwhelmed by the response and there were some amazing dresses.
"I'm having fun narrowing it down, and I'm keeping an open mind until I've seen them all."
She said her final choice will be a simplistic dress, and Wanoa's jewellery would complement whichever one it was.
"The pieces are striking and I connect with the meaning behind them - I'll have a piece of home with me when I'm walking the red carpet in LA."
Wanoa, who has also provided Cordobes with numerous dress designs, is rapt her work has been put on the short list.
"This is an awesome opportunity to inspire cultural pride and to promote my ethnographic jewellery."
Cordobes emailed sketches and photographs of her favourite gowns to her husband and an elegant, sheen black backless number by local designer Belinda Hunt also caught his eye.
"His feedback has been super helpful, he gives a straight up, yes or no, I've even had a wow that would be super-hot," she said.
Richie Cordobes has been working on a movie in North Carolina, but his wife is keeping him in the loop on the dress hunt.
The Cordobes plan to make the most of the Emmy experience. Mandy will spend the entire morning of the event "scrubbing up" before they attend the awards ceremony and then head to the Governor's Ball after function.
