Sex and The City 'has ruined the world': Kelly Cutrone
One of the world's most recognisable fashion publicists Kelly Cutrone has said Sex and the City "ruined the world".
The PR maven, who is renowned for her tough love - she mentored The Hills star and aspiring fashion designer Whitney Port then wrote her first self-help book called If You Have to Cry, Go Outside - took umbrage with the popular TV series for promoting unrealistic ideals about the fashion industry.
"Sex and The City ruined the world and my proof of Sex and The City ruining the world, was Fashion's Night Out. What was it? Girls in dresses with blowouts sipping Skinny Girl margaritas by Bethenny Frankel. That was Fashion's Night Out, and the reason they stopped it? Go figure, nobody bought clothes!" she said during an interview streamed on HuffPostLive.
"It's the fashion industry, it's the highest risk venture capital industry that you're working in. It makes Wall Street look like Cupcakes by Melissa (a popular bakery that sells bite-sized cakes)."
Fashion's Night Out was a concept sponsored by Vogue and launched in 2009 to boost fashion retail sales following the financial crises of 2007 and 2008. The US version was cancelled in 2013. However the Australian arm, driven by Vogue Australia, continues to draw in customers and further propel the local fashion industry. FNO Australia will take place in Sydney on September 4.
Cutrone then took aim at the show's sexist undertones and lamented the amount of time Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha and Miranda wasted focusing on their love lives.
"No women who own multimillion dollar companies sit around and talk about Mr. Big for two hours at brunch," she said.
"They don't. I have a hundred million girlfriends, I have no idea what's going on with the guys they hang out with."
The publicist made the comments while on a publicity tour for the 21st season of America's Next Top Model. Cutrone, who has appeared of numerous reality shows including The Hills and The City, is a judge alongside Tyra Banks where she has earned the moniker Kelly "Killer" Cutrone as the series director calls her every morning before filming to ask, "Are you ready to crush some dreams?"
"Fashion moves really quickly, if you need a lot of dialogue and a lot of cheerleading, football might be a better sport than modelling. Because I think it takes a lot longer to get to the Super Bowl than it does to the runway," she said.
