Best & worst dressed: MTV VMAs
THE ALMOST: There's no doubt Pretty Little Liars actress Lucy Hale looks cute as a button in this Sachin & Babi leather crop and Zimmermann floral midi, but we can't help wishing her skirt was about five inches shorter. Right now the voluminous number is a tad overwhelming on her petite frame, making her legs look positively Hobbit-like. Full marks for hair, makeup and accessories though - we're loving that low, wavy pony.
THE BAD: TV presenter Rosci Diaz wears a gold mesh napkin by Haute Hippies. She personally looks stunning, but this outfit is a fail: she should have either chosen chest action or legs ... so if this was slightly less low cut and short, great; or if it was just this low cut gold top with a simple long skirt or the like; excellent. Also, she'll actually be interviewing people on the red carpet in this: how does she concentrate on the task in hand without constantly being distracted by the threat of a nip slip? What a multi-tasker.
THE GOOD: You know what, if you're going to have yellow, aqua, lime green, pink and blue hair, a neutral dress is probably a good option ... and we think Kesha actually really pulls this off. The beading on the well-cut dress is beautiful, and the fact her head looks like a My Little Pony keeps the whole look from being too 'Celine Dion's Vegas Six-Month-Run Show Wardrobe'.
THE WILD: Yes, the VMA red carpet is a place to forgo fashion and dress for maximum shock-factor, but elasticated animal print skinnies crafted from that shiver-inducing part velour, part terry-towelling fabric paired with a matching bodysuit (is that tog material?!) are never ok. Perhaps Katy Perry is performing later and asked Charlie XCX to lend a hand as a Roar backup dancer.
THE MIXED: Faking It actress Rita Volk somehow makes an entirely mesh and spiderweb lace dress (and one with a crotch V at that) look somewhat classy, and we think she deserves some props for that. (That said, this does look like an IceCapades figure skater outfit for a routine that conceptually deals with doilies).
THE WOWZA: Hey, it's the VMAs, if there's any red carpet at which to wear a merkin and a few chains, this is it. Amber Rose's undoubtedly heavy Laura Dewitt 'dress' is certainly memorable, and will definitely get her a lot of attention. (We're imagining it's quite an eyeful from behind too).
THE MIXED: If it didn't have such a blunt right angle between mini and train, we think we could get on board with Victoria Justice's Khaleesi-dragon-bin-bag of a skirt by LUBLU Kira Plastinina ... but a plastic clutch that says #hashtag? That's a strong never.
THE GOOD: While it looks a bit sacky on a windy red carpet, we actually adore this vintage Halston dress on Jessie J. The colour's beautiful and we imagine it would look stunning in real life. (Although perhaps the multiple hip folds are a touch too much).
THE GOOD: Proving her worth as one of the most successful clothes horses in the world, Jourdan Dunn achieves the near impossible and actually manages to make a miniscule bandeau top work as a legitimate clothing item. Paired with a beautiful Balmain maxi skirt (the bias cut on that thing is heavenly) and statement jewellery the look is pure model-off-duty chic.
Ooh, and here's a snap of Jessie from a better less hip-bunchy angle that solidifies this as a definite good.
THE MEH: Jordin Sparks' makeup is a definite yes - that lipstick is super stunning on her - but we can't help but find the dress a bit utility looking in its tightness and with its ugly zips. Like it's some kind of body suit that she's required to wear to hold her organs in place or the like. Thoughts?
THE MEH: We're all for a well-executed suit moment on the red carpet, but this glitzy H&M number isn't doing Solange any favours. From the boxy jacket to the ill-fitting pants, the whole look falls far below the style standards we've come to expect from her, and those bizarre red eyelashes are doing little to rectify the situation. File this one under 'disappointing'.
THE UNUSUAL BUT STILL GOOD: Here's Aussie rapper Iggy Azalea with her basketball player boyf' Nick Young. Now, Iggy looks stunning in this Versace dress, yes, but the more we stare at the dress' details the more we think it looks like a girly Transformer car pre-transformation ... or some kind of ice throwing Marvel superhero's shield. And yet she still manages to make it look good ... power to her ... that colour is amazing ...
THE BAD: We love Taylor Swift, and she almost always looks good ... but wow, what's going on here?! That's not even a jumpsuit ... it's more like a baby romper you'd buy your nephew in the gift shop after seeing a Cirque du Soleil performance.
THE GREAT: Now this is how you dress for the VMA red carpet - Nicki Minaj is all kinds of fierce in this perfectly tailored, long-sleeved snake print mini. Nude pumps, classic curls and just a touch of finger bling help ground the look, love it.
THE GOOD: Yes, she did get her tongue out (and the sky continues to be blue) but we actually think this Alexandre Vauthier bandeau pant suit looks rocking on Ms Miley Cyrus. (We never thought we'd say that about high waisted leather pants and a teensy tinsy bandeau, also made from cow skin). It's still very 'her' but also pretty classy.
THE OVERCOOKED: We can not even begin to imagine how hard it would be to get into this thing - limbs would just be trying to escape at every turn. Obviously Jennifer Lopez, 45, is a babe, but this Versace dress has about 12 too many cutouts. She might as well just be wearing a bikini (yet somehow, there's a small part of us that just can't help but think this is kind of amazing). Thoughts?
THE GOOD: It's not exactly regulation VMAs garb, but there's no doubt Gwen Stefani looks good in this candy pink L.A.M.B Couture bustier and pant combo. The black accessories, single hair twist and statement lip are so very her, and she's owning it.
THE VA VA VOOM: Rita Ora definitely has a Marilyn vibe, and here she is channeling a nightie-wearing Monroe in a red dress that looks like it's being held together with one simple stitch. It's fabulous and is certainly sexy, but could definitely do with slightly less of a slit (if the slit goes above your belly button then you're veering away from skirt territory and into the realm of just flaps of material).
THE ALMOST: You know what, if she'd worn a cami or something, we'd actually love Kim Kardashian's Balmain look - it's edgy, it's different, and the tapestry is beautiful ... but her serving of cleavage is too super-sized to work with those strong shoulders. Dial it back a touch Kimmy.
THE DRAMATIC: We don't often see Demi Lovato oozing glamour, and if she'd dialled down that extreme cleavage this Lanvin gown would definitely make our top five of the day. The colour is incredible on her, that waist-cinching knot is pure genius and her assymetric 'do offsets the whole look perfectly. A simpler shoe and a few more stitches in the chest area and she'd be bang on the money.
THE TERRIBLE BUT AMAZING: Here Katy Perry and Riff Raff riff on the outfits Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears wore to the 2001 AMAs, and while they obviously look terrible in every single possible way, you've got to love them for paying homage so perfectly to the former Prince and Princess of double, nay treble, denim.
THE GOTHIC: She wears what she wants and doesn't give a toss what anyone thinks about it, but we can't help but wish Lorde would choose something a little less heavy and a little more colourful one of these days. Today's choice is part 80s throwback, part medieval jumpsuit and part Hogwarts robe - the girl must be sweating up a storm in there.
THE GREAT: It's not the most exciting, and it's far from unexpected, but nevertheless Queen B looks flawless in this full length figure-hugging gown. The combination of beading and lace give the dress a gorgeous sheen, and we love that she kept her hair and makeup natural.
GOOD SUIT, BAD SHOES: Sam Smith's navy three-piece Gucci suit is a total classic ... but those clunky brown leather shoes were not the right footwear choice.
THE SMOOTH: He barely puts a foot wrong when it comes to style, and the VMAs were no exception for Usher. His fresh spin on the traditional white shirt/black trou' combo finished off with oversized sunnies and white kicks suits him down to the ground.
THE CASUAL: Although not outstandingly bad, Adam Levine and his gorgeous wife Victoria's Secret model look dressed to hit the town on any given Saturday night, rather than red carpet ready. Both Adam's jacket and Behati's dress are bound to be real leather, but somehow manage to look cheap as chips. It's all just very so-so, thoughts?
It's one of the more outrageous red carpets of the year, and that's why we love it - expect lots of mesh and plenty of studs, sequins and stilettos.
