The weather might be grey and overcast but the clothes are anything but dull at Addington Raceway for Christchurch's Cup Day.

Bright yellows, pinks and hot reds punctuated fashion in the field.

Stylist Stephanie Rumble said "colour was definitely hot" this Cup Day.

"Even men are wearing more colour and getting more flamboyant," she said.

"The colours reflect the recession. People are saying stuff the economy, let's go bright and cheery."

Headwear was also shrinking.

"We're seeing a move away from enormous hats to fascinators or hatinators."

Women wearing jackets with tails also created a flattering line, she said.

Olivia Wakem, 22, wore a Jenny Gilles-designed Monarch butterfly hat paired with a little black dress, making the orange of the butterflies wings stand out.

The Christchurch dancer, whose last work was touring with Starlight Express said the hat reflected the "retro 1970s houses" with large butterflies adorning the brickwork.

She was lucky the age identification for drinking was a matching neon orange.

Caroline Campion, 25, a Christchurch event manager, wore her own design inspired by Japanese fashion.

She found the hot pink and yellow fabric at the Trelise Cooper store in Auckland and fitted a pink corset around the bodice to reflect the lines in her parasol.

The wing sleeves were puffed with tulle.

"It was very much a last-minute effort – two and a half days of getting everything together.

"I'm a very bright, colourful person so it's great to have it in fashion this season."
