Fashion 101: How to wear layers

Fashion
The key to fashionista status - especially in winter - is to master the art of layering.
That effortlessly thrown-together look that A-listers seem to pull off so well can be yours.
The trick is to invest in lots of luxe basics (silk tees, cashmere wraps, long cardis) and throw the rule book out the window. Yes, colours can clash and less is not always more. Here are four ways to do layers.
LUNCH
A long jacket or cardi is a winter essential, especially to work that layered look. Right now, the khaki military trend is big on the fashion landscape.
Team a slouchy jacket or cardi with a pretty silk tee or knit (cashmere, please) and then drape a pashmina, scarf or wrap around your neck.
Add some skinny jeans or fitted pants (dress it up a bit with black), a statement bag and some metallic flats to set off the look.
CASUAL
The layering look has its roots in casual, so permission is granted for "anything goes" here. Vests are a great layering piece and are bang on trend in leather this season.
Your favourite pair of denims and a long-sleeve top under a silk tee is the perfect foundation. Just ensure you inject a bit of glamour with a funky cuff or bangle and some knockout heels.
EVENING
A short-sleeve, tight-fitting leather dress - a la Celine - is one of summer's hottest tickets but that's not to say you can't adopt the look now.
Just layer it up by wearing a long-sleeve knit underneath - go for a shot of gold or something that's going to complement the dress.
If you're working the black-and-gold trend, which is striking for evenings, opt for accessories in the same shade.
OFFICE
Layers are also chic for the office but the golden rule here is not to overload, or risk looking bulky. Team a fabulous pencil skirt with a long-sleeve top or knit and add a statement vest in a punchy shade.
As for accessories, if you can get away with it, go for a shoe boot in a neutral shade, a simple clutch or a chic necklace.
