The new and radical orange-blonde page boy hairstyle of Bob Parker's wife is what the Christchurch Mayor prefers.

Jo Nicholls-Parker is renowned for her jet-black chiselled hair cut but has recently morphed into a gingery blonde for the summer.

Nicholls-Parker said she made the change because her husband had told her she wore too much black and needed to "lighten up''.

She said Parker likes her new hairstyle.

"He likes the new cut. It's much more page boy and that's what he likes,'' she said.

She still subconsciously imagines herself with black hair and gets a shock when she sees her blonde reflection in the mirror, she told The Press.

"A change of hair is as good as a holiday and blondes have more fun,'' said Nicholls-Parker.

The hair colour has started a domino effect on Nicholls-Parker's fashion.

She has ditched the dark lip-liner and lipstick and now sports softer make-up colours like charcoal grey.

She said her clothing is also "slowly but surely'' shifting away from black.

Mod's hair salon made the transformation four days ago and stylist Stewart Corkin said Nicholls-Parker had not changed her hair colour for the past two years.

Nicholls-Parker and Corkin worked together to find the colour and style from the latest Vogue magazine.

"Jo is always willing to try new hair cuts and take it to the next level,'' he said.
