Clark and Key lose in style clash

As the election approaches and politicians jostle for attention, there is one battle both Prime Minister Helen Clark and National leader John Key are losing – and that’s the fashion stakes.
New Zealand stylist Stephanie Rumble says that Helen Clark is too inhibited, John Key needs some contrast, Gerry Brownlee could lose the white shirt look and Michael Cullen is pretty good for an older chap.
"Helen Clark's style is constrained, which is what you would expect from a female politician," she said.
"She has improved a lot over the last five years but there are some obvious areas which appear to have been overlooked.
"John Key is pretty conservative. He always seems to be wearing the same suit -- probably the Canelli one he bought for $2500 from Harrods -- and a shirt with a different tie.
"He is tidy and well presented. It would be interesting to see him in something a little more contrasting."
Ms Rumble, who is launching her new style brand Flair Image tomorrow, said Bill English had "that wholesome boy next door look about him" and his choices were standard for a politician but she would like to see a bit more colour all round.
"Gerry Brownlee is a big man and it is not a good look with a yellow tie," she said.
"He could lose the white shirt and try something a little more interesting.
"Michael Cullen passes the test.
Although Miss Clark wears what Ms Rumble says she would expect from a woman politician, the prime minister doesn't do well otherwise.
She's on the stylist's list of worst dressed New Zealanders, along with radio DJ Pauline Gillespie, TV weatherman Jim Hickey, TV journalist Mark Sainsbury and radio and broadcaster Marcus Lush.
Among the best dressed are Petra Baghurst, fashion expert Lynn Wood and TV hosts Pippa Wetzell and Carly Flynn.

Are there any well dressed New Zealanders anyway? And who's this 'style guru' we are talking about?
I don't like Helen in yellow, it makes her look sallow. Politicians aren't supposed to be fashion models, they just need to be well dressed and smart and most of them could do with some style advice even if it is just to make sure they dress for their shape and colouring. Maybe Trinny and Susannah?
Helen needs to decide whether she should get her teeth fixed. If she doesn't fine but DON'T airbrush the posters and billboards to give her perfect set of chompers. This makes her look ridiculous and dishonest.
Since when did New Zealanders care about fashion? This is the land of the beige brigade! The jandals with socks combo! It's about passion, not fashion.
If our PM (or wannabe PM) were dressed like Petra Baghurst or some fashion expert, they simply would not represent *us*. Plus, nobody would take them seriously.
Let's stick to the issues, lest people start voting based on who has the better set of teeth.
WHO the hell is Stephanie Rumble to grumble? And what does SHE look like?
This story is nothing more than reading advertising. If the fashion is as cheap as the advertising budget i would assume she is going for the budget market. I have met John Key in person and he dresses well in business attire.
Murray - I think you'll find Rodneys jacket is a tongue in cheek stab at the Electoral Finance Act, as it has ACTs logo woven into it.
Clark is well known for her lack of decent dress sense - remember what she wore to see the Queen? Trousers? Is she intentionally telling the world that she doesn't care for fashion or commonsense?
That was embarrassing, but maybe in her last days as PM she should dress up a bit!
Who cares about style and that pollies are not wearing the latest in fashion? I would rather they were 'well-dressed' in reasonably contemporary clothes and concentrating their efforts on policies and governing than wasting time on trying to be the best-dressed poser. This is nothing but another thinly-disguised attempt by a trendy journo to undermine politicians.
I think they are pretty fair comments. I don't think a politician should be too focussed on fashion but there is obviously going to be more appeal to more people if a politician makes an effort to look like they take a bit of pride in how they dress and present themself. Sometimes, too, it helps make them seem more interesting - fashion says alot about a person's personality although Winston Peters is always well groomed and classy looking so maybe not. Sue Kedgley is another politician who always looks stylish and Rodney Hide has improved dramatically in recent times (except for that hideous yellow jacket he is wearing at the moment). The other thing to note is that if Helen and John start wearing too many designer labels they wil be criticised even more. The poor people are damned if they do and damned if they don't.
