Designer Marc Jacobs' Spring/Summer 2012 collection has been stolen.

The influential American designer's latest range was being moved from France to the UK when the theft occurred. A press day to show off the pieces was scheduled to take place in London on Thursday, but had to be cancelled.

The news was announced in an email sent to those due to attend the festivities.

"Dear all, The Marc Jacobs PR team is sorry to inform you that our press day tomorrow in the Marc Jacobs store is cancelled, due to the theft of the Spring/Summer 2012 collections during its transfer from Paris," it read.

There are conflicting reports about how much of the collection was taken. While some sources say the entire line was stolen, others suggest only some clothing items and accessories have been taken.

Jacobs has several collections, including his eponymous range and diffusion line Marc by Marc Jacobs.

The police are currently investigating the crime, although it's thought the designer does have duplicates of all the pieces.

However, the theft may mean fashion magazines will struggle to shoot the collections for their spreads.
