Hi Bronwyn

Every winter I tell myself that this is "the" winter that I will buy boots. But it never happens. Partly because none of the styles really grab me and partly because I always think that next year I will have more money than this year. So my question is, in my quest to find the perfect boot what do I wear in the meantime? Are there other acceptable winter shoes apart from boots?

Boots. Are. Vital. I say that from experience, because it took me a good few years to find my perfect pair. When I found them I couldn't believe what I'd been missing. Warm feet? Dry feet? The ability to wear the most hideous but beautifully warm possum bed socks all day without people knowing? Amazing.

I always say that you should spend money on the things that matter in your wardrobe, the things where quality really matters – for me those things are jeans, coats and boots. Yes, they can be expensive, but a good pair will last many years. I recommend browsing online. Try Shoezies, Mi Piaci, Style Tread, Workshop, Shoe Connection, Ziera and if you're feeling really dreamy try The Outnet. When you find your boots, lay-by. It won't hurt as much as buying them outright.

Meanwhile, pop into Number One Shoes and pick up a pair to tide you over. The quality isn't fantastic, and they're rarely made of leather, but there are lovely styles and they'll keep you snug until you find your investment pair.
