If you're looking to ruin lives by looking too hot, look to Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, and Salma Hayek.

Maybe it's the inclusion of television categories, maybe it's the open bar, but the Golden Globes always seem a bit looser than the Oscars.

That's reflected in the gowns: You'll see more skin, tighter silhouettes, and a badder attitude here than you will at the Academy Awards.

Frankly, I'm firmly in favour of it.

Join me on a journey through the hottest dresses of the Golden Globes red carpet.

SALMA HAYEK, 2003

This is an absolute life-ruiner of a dress, because how could anyone continue on as normal afterwards? It's Narciso Rodriguez, and the perfect argument for the colour red, and keeping it simple.

Let's be real: Hayek's shape is the star of the show here, and she looks incredible.

SOFIA VERGARA, 2012

Sofia Vergara is one of those rare people who can pull off an evening gown like she's wearing jeans, and this custom Vera Wang is no exception. That panelling and that shiny mane make this an absolute victory lap.

SCARLET JOHANSSON, 2006

Another red dress, but can you blame me? This couldn't be anything but Valentino, and Johansson looks like the hottest possible version of herself. Loving the look in her eye on the left there - that's a "Hope every dude who ever broke my heart is seeing this" gleam if I've ever seen one.

JENNIFER ANISTON, 2004

Twelve years on, I'm not sure how that sparkly buckle stands up, but aside from that this deep V Valentino is stunning. Aniston wears a lot of black on the red carpet, which is perhaps a bit at odds with her beachy, California vibe, but it works.

CAMERON DIAZ, 2009

It's definitely not the most body-conscious thing she's ever worn, but there's something a little morning-after-y about this Chanel that earns it a place on this list. Diaz looks stunning in pink, and also like she might have a secret. It's good stuff.

KATE HUDSON, 2002

Considering she's never been better than in Almost Famous, the '70s look of this Atelier Versace makes perfect sense. Split to the navel, and balanced with a long sleeve, this is one of those dresses that works from head to toe. Bombshell status.

COURTNEY COX, 2003

The theme I'm picking up with these gowns isn't just plunging necklines and high slits - though Cox's Ralph Lauren employs those both to great effect - it's block colours and undone hair and makeup. This is a great example of knowing when to say when.

CHARLIZE THERON, 2004

Another uniting element for these hottest-ever dresses is the cat-that-got-the-cream look on their wearers' faces. Theron, in Christian Dior, is well aware of how well this wispy, low-backed number is working for her, and so she should be. Top marks.

MISCHA BARTON, 2005

If you were at high school in the mid-2000s, The OC  was everything, and your boyfriend had a crush on Mischa Barton. I remember desperately wanting to wear this dress to a school ball, and also wanting to date Ryan Atwood. A heady time.

DREW BARRYMORE, 2010

It's figure-hugging and nude in colour, but this is Drew Barrymore, so this Atelier Versace gown also features a slightly bizarre embellishment. That shoulder and hip detailing works, though, and keeps it from being too standard.

JENNIFER LOPEZ, 2009

Who better to finish with than JLo? This is a master class in her exact brand of sex appeal, from the draping, to the deep cowl neck, to the flawless rear view. Finished with a bun, because who needs to try that hard when you look like this?

Which dress is your favourite? Who are you looking forward to this year?
