Skinny jeans in your 60s? Dropping thousands on a designer watch in your 20s? No way. Bronwyn Williams gives you the staples you need now, and at every age.

20's:

Designer Jeans. Yeah yeah, I know it's hard work, but put in the long hours to find the perfect pair now and you'll thank me for the rest of your life. Every clothing label has a different-shaped fit model, so once you've found the brand of jeans that suits your body, stick with it. A perfect-fitting pair of jeans that makes you feel fantastic (and your bottom look good) is the best accessory for any girl's wardrobe.

Jewellery for layering. Fine jewellery is great for layering, can live on your body and goes with practically everything. Pick gold or silver and start collecting.

30's:

A great coat. A fantastic coat finishes an outfit. Pick a classic style like a swing, trench or duster coat and it'll last you years.

Fancy heels: Your career has probably well begun, and it's about time you got into some proper fancy shoes. Drop a bit of hard-earned dosh on designer shoes and you'll not only appreciate the craftmanship, they'll be more comfortable as well. Choose a classic nude or black pump to take you to the office, and a fancier pair for special occasions.

40's:

A cashmere sweater. They say once you go cashmere you'll never go back, and believe me, it's true. The luxuriously soft knit keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter; it's perfect for plane rides and timelessly elegant. Start with cashmere socks and I promise you'll be hooked.

A fabulous gown. There are formal events in your life that are inescapable, and you can't deny it. Invest in a fabulous gown that will make you feel a million bucks, even at your dreaded niece's bad taste wedding.

50's:

A seriously good watch. Time is of the essence, and nothing says class like a seriously good watch. A very special time piece becomes a family heirloom; start the tradition now.

Incredible jewellery. You can make even the most simple outfit sensational with beautiful statement jewellery. A cocktail ring, a bold bejewelled necklace or enormous drop earrings, take your pick.

60's:

A designer bag. Been dreaming of the It bag all your life? The time has come to nab it. Luxuriate in the buttery soft leather and sparkling hardware of your favourite designer bag. Pick a classic shape and you'll never tire of it.

A headturning suit. I always say you can always be underdressed, but it's hard to be overdressed. A sharp suit will flatter your curves and turn heads while doing it. You can hunt for the perfect one off the rack, but for the ultimate treat, get your suit made to measure.
