Marc Jacobs has shown a "brutal and simplistic" collection at New York Fashion Week.

The mod-inspired range was in complete contrast to his opulent Fall/Winter 12 line early this year, which was all about luxurious texture, jewel tones and over-sized hats.

"[It is] very, very brutal. Brutal in its simplicity. That's our new word for the season," he said.

Stripes were the order of the day, featuring on well-cut T-shirts, smart calf-length skirt suits and sexy minidresses. The palette was monochrome, with white T-shirt dresses boasting wide columns of black stretched all the way down.

For those looking for a little more glitz and glamour, there were leopard prints made of leather and sequins stuck on to look like chess boards.

The designer appeared to want his loose T-shirts to take centre stage as in many instances models simply wore black panties underneath.

Other options included low-slung skirts which fell from the hips, A-line coats and ruffles added to pretty tops. Futuristic swirl patterns on a maxi dress added a pop of colour, coming in burgundy on a white background.

As always Jacobs attracted a stellar front row, including Ricky Martin, Rachel Zoe, Karen Elson, Kristen Wiig, Rose Byrne and Kelly Osborne.
