Barney's department store in New York has given some of Disney's favourite characters an extreme makeover for its Christmas display.
The Electric Holiday campaign will see Daisy Duck, Minnie Mouse and friends take a turn on the fashion catwalk, wearing new season designs from labels including Dolce & Gabbana, Balmain and Lanvin.
The collaboration includes a short film and 3D light show, but the high end look is not going down too well with everyone.
Minnie and Daisy are too skinny according to fashionistas, saying there is a risk the look presents an unrealistic body image and could encourage anorexia.
"If they can't make an outfit that looks good on Minnie as she has been for the past 84 years, it doesn't say much for the amount of skill that their designers possess," fumed a commenter on Womens Wear Daily's website. Another called it "morally reprehensible".
Fashion blogger Bridget Foley disgreed and called the outrage an extreme over-reaction.
Barney's creative director Dennis Freedman told WWD it was all a bit of fun and they wanted to be true to the real fashion industry.
"The world of the Paris fashion shows, of fashion, of people in fashion, of the rituals, all of the idiosyncrasies. The important thing to me was always that it had to be authentic. It really had to hit the nail on the head in every detail."
