A woman has been chosen to front Yves Saint Laurent's new menswear advertisements.

Dutch model Saskia de Brauw features in the black and white ads for the famous French label's spring/summer 2013 range. Her slim frame and cropped hair makes her convincing as a young man.

de Brauw is known for her androgynous appearance and was cast by the label's new creative director Hedi Slimane - who has made his name by creating slim-fitting tailored pieces.

The images, taken by Slimane, see de Brauw donning flat boots, skinny trousers and shirts and ties.

In one image she is seen sitting on the floor in a simple black suit with thin tie, while another sees her balancing on a chair in a black leather jacket and skinny jeans.

It's thought one of the reasons the designer cast a woman for his menswear line is to show the clothes are perfect for both sexes and to break down gender barriers. He has previously said his "perception of genders ended up slightly out of focus from an early age".

It's not the first time de Brauw a has modelled men's clothes - she recently graced the catwalk for Givenchy's Spring/Summer 13 men's show.

News of de Brauw's latest job comes after female model Casey Legler signed to the men's division of Ford Models recently.

Supermodel Andrej Pejic has paved the way for such work, with the male star strutting down the catwalk in female collections and even donning a wedding dress for Jean Paul Gaultier.
