Best & worst dressed: Amfar at Cannes
THE MEH: She looks unbelievably beautiful, and I love a redhead wearing red, but the cut of Jessica Chastain's Saint Laurent dress and the way it draws the eye isn't working for me. SL just isn't the same as YSL.

THE NO-NORMAL-PERSON-COULD-WEAR-IT: While this Givenchy look does resemble a cross-stitch shower curtain combined with a sweater Bret McKenzie would wear in an ironic way, model Joan Smalls works it in an I'm-an-Amazonian-goddess-who-can-wear-anything way. That said, would a pedi have killed her?

THE BEST-DRESSED OVER FIFTY: This Cavalli gown fits Sharon Stone perfectly, and I even kind of dig the weird serpent back brace. She's 50-freaking-five.

THE NOT-QUITE: Kylie Minogue's Cavalli gown is very goddess, and there's so much that's good about it - the fabric's beautifully draped and it creates a long line. But, I'm left just thinking it all looks a bit cheap?

THE TOTALLY THEM: I love Goldie Hawn so much because she looks fun and fabulous even when she looks like a hot mess, and this fresh yellow Halston Heritage gown was a whiff of fresh air at the event. Meanwhile, Kristin Scott Thomas looks very classically elegant and very 'her' in a beautiful Lanvin dress. Goldie couldn't wear Kristin's look and Kristin couldn't wear Goldie's, and that's the beauty of personal style.

THE GLIMMER GIRLS: Aishwarya Rai and Audrey Tautou rock metallics with equal levels of glamour but in totally different ways. Ash wears a beautiful gold Tarun Tahiliani saree - only fail, overcooked hair; while Audrey rocks a tiered silver-frosted Lanvin gown: only fail, misplaced nude pumps.

THE WORST: Oh dear. Heidi Klum's Marchesa gown is a fail all over. On the runway, the bottom layer of the dress was actually mid-calf length, which worked a lot better. Either Klum's trying to suck up to Harvey Weinstein here (his wife's the Marchesa designer) or she's just had a taste brain fart. Tim Gunn would not be pleased.

THE PRETTY: The Victoria's Secret model's impossibly pert breasts were the talk of Cannes yesterday, and at Amfar they seemed to look humanly possible again in this pretty pink Elie Saab gown. Gorgeous dress, but I preferred yesterday's hair.

THE MODELS: Petra Nemcova wears one of my favourite gowns from Elie Saab's Fall 2013 collection; Karolina Kurkova looks like an Olympic swimmer-cum-goth mermaid in Roberto Cavalli while Alessandra Ambrosio channels Grecian-goddess-meets-living room curtains in Zuhair Murad.

THE UNFLATTERING: Dita Von Teese falls victim to just a little too much volume (this voluminous skirt would work if this Ulyana Sergeenko gown was sleeveless) while Rosario Dawson's Vionnet dress gives her the shoulders of a quarterback (that's not a good thing).

THE BEST: Sometimes a simple look can be just sublime, like with this Christian Dior dress on Rosie Huntington Whiteley. Hands down the best I've seen one of these-assymetrical strapless Dior dresses look, ever (and they've been EVERYWHERE). Clean, crisp couture.

The 20th annual Cinema Against Aids gala was the fashion pinnacle of the sartorial smorgasbord that is Cannes.

Models, musicians and muses rubbed shoulders, all wearing out-there and beautiful gowns.
