Best & worst dressed: CFDA Awards
THE GREAT: This Herve Leroux gown would fail on a Kardashian, but it totally works on the gorgeous Sofia Vergara. In fact, this is my favourite look from her in a long time because it's more contemporary than most of her red carpet attempts thanks to the interesting pleating and the bold emerald hue. Yes, it's very va-va voom, but it's also very her, and that's what really matters.

THE GOOD: Rose Byrne's look here is successful in her unique modern and fashion-forward meets girly way. The juxtaposition of a dramatic black sequin dress with purple satin pumps works, her barely-there eye makeup works, but her hair? It's a bit about-to-wash-your-hair-but-can-only-find-a-bobby-pin.

THE NOT QUITE: Nicole Richie's hair and makeup is beautiful, and this Marc Jacobs dress is almost a knock-out, and most other fashion commentators loved it, but I can't help but think it looks like a giant shiny apron. I also fear it may have been a bit much from a direct side angle. Thoughts?

THE MEH: Linday Vonn is 5'10", but this Cynthia Rowley gown makes her look Hayden Panettiere-height at best.

THE WOULDN'T WORK ON 'NORMAL PEOPLE': Model Karolina Kurkova and Magic Mike actress Cody Horn both wore Michael Kors. A) Can you imagine a non-leggy blonde wearing that sort of metallic tunic with weensy tight shorts poking out underneath? B) I just want to run up and rip Cody's peplum off and give her heavy eye makeup a quick wipe (in a, I've-just-attempted-smoky-eyes-after-four-beers, nothing-a-quick-wipe-won't-fix kind of way).

THE ZZZ...: I love Jessica Chastain, but this Givenchy look is making me all sleepy in a Carey Mulligan at Cannes kind of way. The most interesting thing is that the dress is half-corduroy, half chiffon, and if it had been in a brighter colour we might have actually been able to appreciate the unusual texture mash up.

THE GOOD: Alec and Kim's daughter, Ireland Baldwin, is already asserting her fashion brand as a kind-of, 'I don't care about trends, I'm all about glamour', and this David Meister gown fits her aesthetic perfectly. The soggy bottom is a shame, but she can't exactly stop the elements now can she?

THE UNUSUAL: I feel like this is what Charlize Theron's character in Prometheus would wear for a big night out (maybe off-ship), and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Supe' Erin Wasson usually has a very, boho, heavy eyeliner, female-equivalent of Johnny Depp look, and so this sci-fi Alexander Wang gown is very different for her. It's weird, yes, but also kind of amazingly cut.

THE MEH: To the left we have Adriana Lima, now we've already seen this Givenchy shower curtain-style dress on the red carpet, but this is the first time it's been paired with sequinned hot pants. And no, they don't improve it. To the right we have Alessandra Ambrosio wearing a mesh and white Kaufmanfranco - it's pretty, yes, but not memorable.

THE MIXED: Ashley stayed at home, but Elizabeth and Mary Kate Olsen made an appearance (which is lucky, because Mary Kate and Ashley's line The Row won Womenswear Designer Of The Year - I hope their hideous $68,000 backpacks didn't contribute to the honour). Anyway, Elizabeth is in fact wearing The Row - she actually looks gorgeous, while Mary Kate wears vintage Issey Miyake (not a total fail, but is it just me, or does she look to have achieved Mickey Rourke-levels of fake tan?).

THE GREAT: Perfect styling (and those amazing statement brows) make this Helmut Lang black and white gown a red hot hit on Hilary Rhoda. It's very Megan Draper but with a modern twist.

THE BAD: Oh Jemima Kirke. In Girls you're all wacky, I'm-wearing-a-feather-duster-as-a-top-but-it-looks-cool, but this Wiccan beachwear vibe isn't working.

THE NOT-QUITE: For me, this is a case of good dress, good makeup, but not together. This bright yellow Jason Wu gown is pretty - but does the fabric look a bit el-cheapo? And Kerry Washington can usually rock the whole hardly-any makeup, hair straight back thing, but I think a gown of this magnitude requires a bright lip or at least some contrasting jewels.

THE MEH: I love the shimmer of Miranda Kerr's Proenza Schouler gown, but the cut is a bit 'awks' and, well, tubular. Thoughts?

Vergara, Kerr, Chastain, Vonn and models galore - the 2013 Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards were, unsurprisingly, a sartorial feast.
