Most five-year-olds do nothing with mirrors other than make them grubby with their sticky little fingers. Alonso uses them to harness his style-prowess so that he can share it with the world.

A five-year-old living in Laguna Beach is fast becoming an internet style icon, posting pint-sized selfies and what-he's-wearing shots where he sports exclusively designer threads.

Alonso Mateo has an array of Dior, Gucci, Stella McCartney, Bon Point, Nordstrom, Little Marc Jacobs, Dolce & Gabbana and Tom Ford at his disposal.

Unlike other child-style icons, Alonso's parents aren't celebrities. His mother, Luisa Fernanda Espinosa, is a freelance stylist, and his father is the owner and CEO of a private equity firm.

Espinosa started posting pictures of her son to Instagram last year, and now has more than 129,000 followers.

Alonso now has his own Instagram account, and has become a social media phenomenon, with five fan accounts dedicated to his style, two of which have sprung up in the last month.

His impeccable style makes him look like a miniature adult, and his photos feature outfits that include tailored suits or drop-crotch pants teamed with a blazer and his signature Ray-Ban aviators.

Espinosa said Alonso now produces his own shoots.

"I don't know if it's because he's an only child and he's surrounded by so many grown-ups that he kind of wants to replicate what everybody around him is wearing?" she said.

"I don't think he really notices he's fashion forward. He's too young."

Alonso poses in his photos with confidence, modelling his designer outfits with a charismatic smile.

"I love suits, sneakers, and sunglasses," the boy told the Cut.

"I like to dress like my dad, because he has cool suits."

While Alonso is becoming a style inspiration for many, critics comment that he is too young to be interested in fashion or designer labels.

"I think people usually judge right away," Espinosa said.

"When we go shopping, if he wants loafers just like his daddy and I can afford them, I get them. We're fine raising our son. He's always polite, he's grounded, he's a sweet boy."

Alonso and his family lived in Mexico until he was three years old, but they've since moved to Laguna Beach.
