Best & worst dressed: July 19
THE BEST: This dress on Helen Mirren confirms something I've thought for a long time: Elie Saab is pretty much a genius when it comes to flattering the female form. I love the contrast of the coral and green, I love how the strong shoulders and clever draping truly flatters the 67-year-old's figure. I also love that she wore Perspex 'stripper heels' underneath the dress - because nobody can see them and it just proves she's got a great sense of humour (am also digging her hubby's lapels).

THE BAD: Maybe soap actress Bonnie Dennison is a keen environmentalist, and that's why she's taken an old sheet and ritually stained it with leftover tea (oh, and she's also cut rib windows of the material out to be used to make patchouli poultices).

THE BAD: Oh CZJ, you are so beautiful, why did you do this to thee? This Michael Kors dress is like Kris Jenner at the pool: she's just stepped out of the water after a swim with a body double of baby North West (you know, just to entice the paps), and has popped her metallic-chic sarong on over her black one piece. If it was on Kris Jenner by the pool as described, I'd be like, 'oh yeah, that's a pass', but this is Catherine Zeta Jones. SHE CAN DO BETTER.

THE WORST: This woman is a fashion designer, people - there's so much wrong with Jessica Lapidos' outfit, but the white crotch shower of material emerging from her tie-dye leggings takes the cake. I actually find it hard to look at (at least sequin-singlet guy's pants are acceptable).

THE BAD: Kerri Walsh (with a pregnant belly) was one of the cover stars of ESPN's body issue, and the gorgeous volleyball star certainly has an amazing figure, but this dress? It's not working for her: I don't know if it's meant to be a bit looser, or if the design features the most ineffectual peplum known to man, either way it looks like she's stolen her 15-year-old niece's prom dress.

THE BAD: Dear Syd Wilder, strapping a nude stocking on underneath your dress to cover boob is not a good move. The comedian needs to either invest in some strong double-sided tape (Hollywood must have shops dedicated to the stuff by now) or invest in another dress (in fact, the latter would be preferable).

THE GOOD: Emma Heming, 35, definitely trumped her 58-year-old hubby Bruce Willis' style on the Red 2 campaign trail (check them, being Mr and Mrs Monochrome). I love the simplicity of her white mini, and her black Victoria Beckham dress is all class. She always sticks to a minimalist sense of style, and clearly knows how to flatter her petite figure.

THE GOOD: Emmy Rossum shows Anna Kendrick and Emma Roberts how it's done in this beautiful Carolina Herrera gown: it's timeless, it's elegant and it's also just plain pretty. She's lovely.

THE GOOD: TV star and ex-ANTM contestant Katie Cleary deserves mad props for managing to make a skin-tight red dress with cutouts look classy at Wednesday's ESPY awards. Bottom line, she looks amazing.

THE GOOD: Olivia Munn looks super chic in this light grey dress - showing off just the slightest bit of belly keeps it interesting, while perfect styling (she rocks that raspberry lip) keeps it classy.

THE GOOD: While I have to admit that this lace Dolce & Gabbana dress isn't at all to my taste, I have to take off my aversion-for-lace-minis glasses and acknowledge that Selena Gomez looks smashing. I think it's the interesting detailing around the waist and the bold red lip that makes it a win for me.

THE GOOD: Vanessa Hudgens used to be one of my "Google if i can't find enough bads" but she's obviously hired a new stylist, as she's been looking pretty amazing recently (while still keeping to her somewhat boho aesthetic). I have to give her props for making this Jenny Packham jumpsuit look about ten times better than it did on the ruwnay: the model's was unlined, and so the poor thing looked like a naked bedazzled ghost. Vanessa, however, looks like J-Lo Gen-Y (meanwhile, Nicolas Cage's hair is creeping into dangerous John Travolta territory).

This week Helen Mirren and Selena Gomez shine, while Catherine Zeta Jones makes a rare misstep.
