9 of the best of Kiwi and international ethical fashion items gallery

Kowtow anchor quilted coat, $339. These guys scored an A in the report, so it makes sense to start with them. This little quilted swing coat is simple, adorable, and just '70s enough. Put it with high-waisted jeans and chelsea boots.

Kowtow building block dress, $99. While we're looking at Kowtow, though, you're playing yourself if you don't have a couple of these t shirt dresses in your wardrobe. With a waist belt they're perfect work wear, and the brand's organic cotton is gorgeous.

Carlie Ballard traveller pants, $108. I spotted these on Well Made Clothes, a site that organises its stock by the values of the brands who make it. These trousers are made in a small scale workshop in Lucknow, India, and would look great with heels and a cami for drinks.

Reformation Lottie dress, $351. Maybe it's for the best that Reformation don't have a New Zealand store. I'd spend all my money there. (They ship here for free, but it's easier to close a tab than pry yourself out of a shop.) The company is all about waste minimisation and ethical practises.

Matt & Nat saddle bag, $134. This Canadian brand doesn't use any leather, and its bags are all lined with recycled plastic bottles. Plus, this little shoulder bag is cute as hell. Sold.

Patagonia latticeback tank, $102, and centred tights, $125. For whatever reason, it's easier to find ethically made workout wears than normal clothing, but Patagonia were the originals. If you're going to sweat, you might as well feel good about it.

Lonely Alice dress, $299. Back in NZ, Lonely say they're always working to improve on their supply chain. They're currently working on external accreditation for their manufacturers. This dress is bound to be a winter staple.

Karen Walker Virgo necklace, $199. One of Kiwi fashion's biggest names, Karen Walker's grade went from a C to a B+ this year. Her jewellery has always been gorgeous, and I'm obsessing over this pendant from the Zodiac collection.

Stella McCartney jeans, $658. Let's finish on a "dreams are free" note. These jeans couldn't be cooler, and Stella McCartney was flying the environmental flag long before it was cool.
