Red carpet rewind: Rihanna
Robyn Rihanna Fenty's demo tape was sent to Shawn Corey 'Jay Z' Carter's office in late 2004 - and by 2005 she'd burst onto the scene with Pon de Replay (and the same day that she first sang for Jay and L.A. Reid she'd signed a six record deal). Her first year of stardom was an interesting one sartorially - especially marked by those bedazzled pinstripes (sometimes we imagine fashion is pretty much the same now as it was in the mid Noughties. Nuh-uh).
In 2006, Rihanna's second album took off, as did her sense of style - we can see a chronological improvement from left to right here. Early 2006 saw hacked-up Bridget Jones jumper monstrosities and tights that look like she's overloaded on the Nuxe glitter oil, while later on in the year she rocked more sophisticated dresses (check her and Amanda Bynes hanging out pre-their Twitter feud).
The Barbadian's early 2007 style was ladylike (even when she was sporting a moon boot), but when she released Good Girl Gone Bad she chopped her hair and started edging things up (rather unsuccessfully in Armani Prive at the AMAs - she looks like a giant Great Gatsby-era brooch).
In her Disturbia year, Rihanna went bold at almost every red carpet event, and while I'm not a huge fan of her blue Zac Posen from the Grammys, and am definitely not a fan of the Scarlett O'Hara nightie by Giambattista Valli she wore to the BETs, the leather look at the AMAs is an edgy triumph.
This is the year Rihanna went fahhhh-shuuuun, wearing a puffy-shouldered tuxedo by D&G to the Met, sunglasses at almost every opportunity and plenty of ruffles and spikes. The origami-style Stephane Rolland she wore to the Glamour Woman of the Year awards is one of my favourite Ri-Ri moments ever.
The dying of her hair red seemed to directly correlate with an upping of her style game this year. At the Grammys she wore a rather overwhelming Elie Saab gown, and she wore a Bjork-like Viktor & Rolf to the Clive Davis Grammys party. Later in the year, however, a newly redhead Ri-Ri had some style smashes (including a more successful collab with Elie Saab with this red dress at the AMAs).
Staying redhead for most of the year, Rihanna made some bold style statements in 2011 - the turquoise feather situation was not a win, but the manly-but-chic suit at the Billboards and the furry/see-through Jean Paul Gaultier dress (that sounds so bad in writing) at the Grammys were hits. Check how cute the Biebs was back when he was still defined by a fringe!
The year Rihanna began her acting 'career' (she was actually good in Battleship, no matter how bad the film was) she opted for edgier, sleeker outfits: especially with the white Adam Selman dress she wore to the Battleship LA prem.
This year, Rihanna absolutely won the Grammys in this beautiful red vintage Azzedine Alaia dress, while her double-denim jean design was something only she could pull off, and her Chanel cardi very risky. Her most-recent hairstyle is the oh-so controversial rat's tail. Hmm ...
