Best & worst: Globes parties
GREAT MAKEUP: I'm surprising myself by not hating this fuzzy-topped Alexander McQueen dress on Allison Williams. It's interesting, and different, and while the dress isn't a solid fave for me, I really love how clever use of white shadow means her eye makeup mimics her dress. I also really love how she was clearly so excited about meeting Rita Wilson she just stood up from the Girls table and let her napkin tumble to the floor. I don't blame her. Rita is next level.
THE FUN: I love colour on the carpet, and so I may be a bit biased, but I think Ashley Madekwe 'werks' this Roksanda Ilincic column dress. Girl deserves a slow clap for making three highlighter colours work all at once.
THE GOOD FROM THE BACK: We've all seen Blurred Lines video girl Emily Ratajkowski from all angles, and, speaking of angles, this Roberto Cavalli gown looks beautiful from the back, but a bit meh from the front - she should've just walked down the after-party red carpet backwards.
THE LOVE-THE-TEXTURE: Is it just me, or is Gillian Anderson peaking in her mid-40s? I spent most of The Fall admiring how sister could work a silk shirt (when I really should've been focussing on the crims). I'm not sure about the length of this dress, but I absolutely ADORE how it's completely covered in feathers. Way to elevate the LBD!
THE BAD: I feel absolutely no feelings toward Hayden Panettiere's Tom Ford dress (except for the fact it looks like something from Julian MacDonald's cheap difussion line for Debenhams) but that hair?! I understand that Hayden's pint sized, but please don't try and add a few inches by actually spending time attempting to look like Billy Rae (before Miley was born).
THE BAD: Jaime King went the Jennifer Lawrence route and seemed to be inspired by loo roll on the night: from the front this Prabal Gurung dress is just unflattering, but the moment this turned from 'meh' to 'bad' was when the hard-to-make-her-look-bad King turned around and I spotted that the designer had basically stuck a giant bonnet on her back.
THE GOOD: Gorgeous, gorgeous Julianna Margulies, 47, looks super regal in this Andrew GN dress. I'd probably have ditched the earrings, but that's minor.
THE MIXED: I would love the top of this Carolina Herrera dress on Julie Bowen with a 'flowier' bottom, and I'd love the bottom with a less Victorian top. That said, seeing the Modern Family 'family' hang out for real makes me so happy I don't really care.
THE I'M NOT SURE: While, yes this is quite pretty, Kaley Cuoco spent the whole night pulling up this Rani Zakhem dress, and so that's a fail. I'm also not a fan of her green eye makeup (it's a touch too harsh for her) and her limp hair (she looks like me when I can't be arsed to shower and so have to pull out the dry shampoo).
THE SHINY: While for most people this super sheeny Perry Meek gold 'dress' would be too costumey, it's actually very toned down for our Lady of Gags, and while her hair looks like it's actually been harvested from a Barbie, I think she looks rather pretty.
OH-PUT-IT-AWAY: I guess, to her credit, this is a smart move, as if Lady Victoria Hervey wasn't wearing this Gaurav Gupta gown, she wouldn't make most people's cut to even mention. Considering I rip my stockings within about five minutes of wearing them, I have no idea how she manages to walk in this without tearing the shiz out of the impossibly-thin bum stocking.
THE GREAT: I LOVE Michelle Monaghan, I dig how she's gone for a really natural makeup look and I think this Antonio Berardi dress looks wonderful on her (I don't like the embroidery - a touch cheap-looking, but she makes this work so well I don't even care). PS: Mich, TURN AROUND, Tom is there!! He's alive, he still loves you!
THE BAD: I'm not a model but even I, as the owner of a round, chubby-looking face, know never to go near a harshly pasted-down middle part: Miranda Kerr should know better. Now, the dress: it's Emilio Pucci and I also think it's hoochy (SEE, I may have a fat face, but I'm a poet!). Also, she needs to take off all of those necklaces ... IMMEDIATELY.
THE GOOD: Full disclosure: I have such a girl crush on Olivia Munn that I may be blind to her fashion choices, but I'd call this Juan Carlos Obando dress a win (I'm not a fan of the actual design of the dress' top half, but she's so purdy ...)
THE FINE: Parks & Rec and Downton Abbey colliding - my brain is pounding, it's too much. Rashida Jones looks perfectly lovely in this Fausto Puglisi dress (a designer who insists on putting palm tress on EVERYTHING).
THE GOOD: Things learned from these pictures. A) EVERYONE, even the queen of cool Robin Wright Penn and her fiance Ben Foster, look silly when photographed dancing. 'OOH, yeah, get in the groove.' B) Robin, 47, needn't wear hardly any makeup at all to look absolutely radiant ... particularly when wearing gold Reem Acra.
THE VA-VA-VOOM: Sofia Vergara looks smoking in Zuhair Murad - yes, that's a lot of chesticular action, but she totally pulls it off.
THE MEH: Taylor Swift looks perfectly lovely, but this Julien Macdonald dress is just ugly - it's very 'girl-strutting-down-Queen-Street-in-June-with-red-splotchy-goose-pimpled-legs'. That said, Tay-Tay's clearly got some moves - check her and Hailee Steinfeld getting down.
THE FINE: I'm still too mad at Laura Prepon (right) for ditching Orange Is The New Black for Scientology, and for homophobic reasons, so I can't even deal with what she's wearing. Her co-star Taylor Schilling, however, looks nice - if a touch, super rich Southern woman wandering through her mansion in her lingerie - in Thakoon. And check it, Tay's dress busted at the seams, and yet she still turned up to the party. My kind of lady.
THE DATED: The material of Uma Thurman's Atelier Versace dress looks like it comes from the same store at which Mama June buys Honey Boo Boo's costume threads from (but June would, of course, only buy baby pink). I love this picture of Uma, Heidi and 'unidentified woman' giving Harvey Weinstein some love - what's the bet this kind of stuff happens to Harvs on the daily? Like, he's just at Whole Foods picking up some quinoa for Georgina and BAM Elle Macpherson jumps in front of him and just shimmys.
THE GLAMOROUS: Vanessa Hudgens is known for her love of big hats and paisley, so I'm refreshed to see how well she does sexy glam in Giorgio Armani. I'm also loving her boyf' Austin Butler's skinny tie ... but am not loving Vanessa's spiky nails: I know they're a trend, but, straight up, they frighten me.
The real fashion risks of the Golden Globes came out after dark ... here we cover the best & worst dressed looks from the after parties of one of the biggest events of the year, covering some of the actresses we missed on the super-busy red carpet, as well as some A-list outfit changes.
