New Zealand's best ice cream flavours have been singled-out at the 13th annual awards.

A licorice gelato ice cream from Takapuna on Auckland's North Shore has won the top prize at New Zealand's 13th annual Ice Cream Awards.

Judges of awards held in Palmerston North today said the ice cream from Takapuna Beach Cafe and Store was near perfect with a delicate aniseed flavour and smooth creamy texture.

The Takapuna cafe also won the best sorbet category with its Mango Sorbet.

The competition had a record number of entries this year with 211 ice creams entered into 11 categories.

The winners include:

- Standard Vanilla Ice Cream: Tip Top Vanilla Ice Cream 2L

- Standard Ice Cream with Inclusions: Tip Top Good Goody Gum Drops 2L

- Premium Vanilla Ice Cream: Deep South French Vanilla

- Premium Ice Cream: Limonata Cheesecake from Kiwi Ice Cream

- Creative Division: Creamy Chocolate & Raspberry with a Hit of Chilli Ice Cream from Tip Top

- Kids Choice: Killinchy Gold Chocolate Fudge Brownie from Emerald Foods

- Gelato: Licorice Gelato from Takapuna Beach Cafe & Store

- Sorbet: Mango Sorbet from Takapuna Beach Cafe & Store

- Low Fat: Chateau Strawberry Yoghurt from Emerald Foods

- Supreme Award: Licorice Gelato from Takapuna Beach Cafe & Store
