The banning of a woman from a home-brew beer contest because she's not a man has caused a froth.

Rachel Beer – yes that's her name – wanted to enter the home brew competition at tomorrow's Lake Hayes A&P Show in Queenstown but was told it was a "blokes-only" contest.

"Who cares if I have or haven't got balls?" she told Mountain Scene. "At the end of the day, a home brew is a home brew."

In Nelson, which is branded the Craft Brewing Capital of New Zealand, even Nelson A&P Show organiser Liz Harvey is horrified – and she's a Southlander.

The Nelson show allowed women to enter the home-brew category, just as men entered the baking, with one winning the jam-making last year, Harvey said.

"Brewing is not something that's unique to men. If they're going to have a just-men contest, then they should also have a just-women contest and then have the two winners compete," she said.

The Nelson Mail beer columnist Maria Grau said she was shocked when she heard of the ban.

"It's ridiculous and needs to be fixed," she said.

Grau entered the home-brew contest at the Nelson A&P Show with fellow brewer and columnist Fritz Kuckuck and their Dopplebock was judged the champion beer.

Maybe that's why the southern show doesn't want women entered – they might show up the blokes.

Lake Hayes A&P Show president Mike Smith told Mountain Scene he was unaware of a brewing competition. He suggested Beer put a proposal to his committee for a women's or mixed-gender section next year.

I still can't believe that 47% of those surveyed so far think it is ok to have a men only home brewing competition. Surely the only thing that matters is producing quality beer for all of us (men and women) to enjoy. Those men stuck in the dark ages who believe the production of beer should be limited to men only really need to take a break from drinking long enough to wake up (sober up) and check the calender. It is 2012 not 1912.

As is so often the case, the original offensive act is nothing compared to the comments that are made about it.

When someone objects to something like this, the comments are get made in this sort of forum only serve to justify the original complaint. The outstanding sexism and misogyny here ....

As I said previously, she has NOT been banned from entering. She has been told she can enter, but her entry will not be judged.

So all this crap about women-only gyms is irrelevant. It is not a matter of exclusion of entry.

Yes - there are gender-specific events. But this was not billed as a men-only event. It was an open event and she was told her entry would not be judged. That makes a big difference.

As for men having time for themselves - this is a competition, not a male bonding exercise.

If this was a Women's only contest would it still be news? I am all for equal rights but that does not imply everyone has to have access to everything, it is healthy to have the odd fun activity that is segregated. Ms Beer should get over herself and go find somewhere else she can brew.... this PC stuff is getting a bit silly really.

@skipp #13 Women's only gyms are so that women feel safe while exercising and aren't leered at by the likes of you.

Night club dress codes don't apply to women? My (female) friend wasn't allowed in a club the other day because of the way she was dressed. Besides, it's financially better for the clubs to get as many women in there as they can. When they have more women, more men will appear.

You're far too 1950's.

It's alright to discriminate if it's in the name of competition

look at the woman flaring up of this sexism bull****. Let us talk about Woman-Only gyms shall we? It's ok for woman to demand their own gyms...yet men want to hold their own competition and that's NOT OKKKKK. Here's an idea...if it's sooooooo terrible for woman to be excluded, why not just hold your own beer brewing competition? and hell...include men if you MUST.

@ Jo #163, the same reason as why there are no men on the Silver Ferns netball team, truth is, if there were, more likely they would not loose to Aussie all the time.

Would you be keen to eat a lab-grown sausage?

I'd give anything a try.

Does it come with sauce?

A sausage is a just a sausage.

Are you kidding? No way.
