Auckland cat cafe offers snuggles with your cappuccino
A cuddle from Lady Molly Snuggleton is likely to come with your coffee at Auckland's latest cat cafe.
Lady Molly, otherwise known as Snuggles, is one of a dozen rescue moggies now calling BaristaCats on Queen Street home.
The idea of cat cafes started in Asia but was spreading around the world, founder Julia Whitehead said.
* What's New Zealand's first cat cafe really like?
* Customers flock to The Cat Lounge
"It's a wee bit mad but I think, and I hope, it's the right kind of mad," she said.
"Everyone deserves a bit of animal love in their life and it's harder and harder for people to have that in a really urban city like Auckland.
"Sometimes you have a really hard day and what you need is a little bit of fluff."
BaristaCats opened on Tuesday, and for $15 you can get an hour with the cats and a hot beverage.
Whitehead didn't want it to be an animal experience only, so the cafe also serves good coffee and cupcakes, and has wifi.
She had spent a year working with agencies including Auckland Council, the Ministry of Primary Industries and the SPCA to make the cafe happen.
Customers think it's an ordinary cafe at first, she said.
"Then they keep going down the corridor sort of Narnia-like through the wardrobe to our lounge area and see the cats.
"We get a lot of 'oh' faces."
