My Food Bag has dominated the food delivery service, but now smaller companies are competing for a place on Kiwi dinner tables. 

One of those is Feast Box - a Raglan-based company cooked up by Rachel Brown, 39, and Tara Wrigley, 41.

The two close friends and working mums say the concept is based on taking the stress out of entertaining. Their first delivery of food boxes went out for this Easter Weekend, with recipes and ingredients for four-course meals feeding different sized crowds or alternatively a "sharing platter".

Everything is sourced from small, organic companies, something Rachel says is hugely important to the company.

"What we're hoping is we're actually introducing produce to our customers that they will continue to use and investigate. We're promoting those smaller producers that don't get their head above water."

The pair weren't interested in doing the weekly thing - My Food Bag already has that chunk of the market, says Brown. But she says they would look at a wider range of regular offerings in the future. 

Hitting closer to My Food Bag's target audience is WOOP (World On Our Plate) food bags, which caters for three meals each week for busy adults. 

Each meal is inspired by different cuisines from around the world.

Frenchman Thomas Dietz had been supplying ready-made French-style meals to supermarkets for three years before he founded WOOP in 2015.

Dietz says a key point of difference to the company is the pre-prepared components - vegetables are pre-cut and the meats are marinated.

The company has delivered more than 100,000 meals, and has a target to reach a value of $1 million at the end of March.

​These businesses join others that had already secured a slice of the market.

Farro Food Kits let users choose the individually-priced meals they want online, and then delivers these with a recipe on a nominated day. 

Food Box takes more of a DIY approach - you can order and customise fruit and vege boxes, meat boxes, and essentials like coffee and milk.
