Five of Auckland's best cafes for you and your dog
Bring your own dog - or BYOD - to cafes and restaurants is a trend we would definitely like to see more often.
Firstly, because we all know dogs are the root of all happiness, and anyone who says otherwise is not to be trusted.
And secondly, as any true dog lover will tell you, there are few simpler pleasures in life than taking little Rex for a leisurely weekend walk, and topping it all off with a cuppa and a sit down at the local caf.
Finding an establishment with al fresco seating is a must, and it doesn't hurt if the cafe forks out for a wee doggie bowl either.

1. Cornwall Park Cafe - One Tree Hill Domain
This is what you'd call a capsule location for any city-dwelling dog owner. There are wide open spaces for a gentle walk, hills and valleys for more intense exercise and a lovely little cafe with plentiful outdoor seating options to top it off - all within one sweet park.
Located in the heart of Greenlane, the domain is triangled between Green Lane West, Manukau and Campbell Rds, making it the largest area of parkland in Auckland City.
The cafe itself sports water dishes for pups, outdoor tables and staff even bring out bean bags on a sunny day. Your pooch can chill in the shade of the tables while you take your time and enjoy a delicious brunch with friends or family.
2. Garden Shed Cafe - Mt Eden Village
Following on the volcanic theme, why not take a lap of Mount Eden, the highest natural point on the Auckland isthmus, then refuel in one of Mt Eden village's many busy eateries?
We suggest the Garden Shed Cafe at 70 Mt Eden Rd for all your dog-friendly dining needs. It has plenty of outdoor seating, great to tie the dog lead to, and undercover courtyard seating out back for sheltered doggy dining.
The cafe by day, bar by night may be famous for its gratuitous burgers and super-charged smoothies, but we think its dog-friendliness might just be the best thing about it.
3. Ponsonby Central - Ponsonby
This trendy haunt is a great place for canine spotting - especially for the 'designer dogs' of the pug or French bulldog persuasion.
Located at 136 Ponsonby Rd, Ponsonby Central even has its own doggy mascot, Cedric the #PrinceOfPonsonby, who comes complete with his own Instagram page. The owners also have six rescue dogs of mixed breeds that frequent the office and are a regular sight around the laneways of the establishment.
The public are also free to bring their own pups, so long as they stick to the laneways and outdoor cafe seating areas and out of the kitchens!
4. Buoy Cafe - Westhaven
Relatively new to the scene, Buoy, at 141-151 Westhaven Drive, is growing in popularity among dog walkers and avid brunchers alike.
The cafe opened in July and has a big outdoor seating area with ever-refreshed water bowls.
The location, at the base of the Auckland Harbour Bridge overlooking the Waitemata Harbour, means it's great for those already out walking with their dogs along the Westhaven waterfront area.
5. Little & Friday - Belmont
All Little & Friday eateries are great for a lengthy lunch or take away delights, but the one in Belmont on the North Shore is especially great for dog lovers.
Pick a seat out front or in the gorgeous back yard garden and soak up the sun with a raspberry cream doughnut.
The back garden is off-leash and boasts dog bowls and enough space for your pup run around or simply relax in the shade.
