In my fridge: Ian Curley
Would you trust a bunch of ex-cons in a kitchen filled with sharp knives and other potential weapons? In new show Conviction Kitchen Australia (8.30pm Thursdays on Prime), executive chef Ian Curley will be putting a group of convicted criminals to the test, teaching them the skills needed to survive in a high pressure restaurant kitchen.
Curley, who was born in the UK but now lives in Australia, says his own tough upbringing means he is well-placed to help them get their lives back on track.
Off-screen, Curley manages four venues and three restaurant kitchens in Melbourne, as well as being dad to two preschoolers. He reveals what's in his fridge.
WHAT FIVE THINGS ARE ALWAYS IN YOUR FRIDGE?
1. Yoghurt for the kids.
2. Champagne and wine for me.
3. Anchovies. I love the Ortiz ones - can't get enough of them.
4. Some sort of dip, usually taramasalata.
5. Lots of cold water.
DO YOU HAVE A STANDBY, NEVER-FAIL RECIPE THAT USES ALL OR SOME OF THESE INGREDIENTS?
I love nothing better than making fruit smoothies with my daughters, aged 4½ and 2½. Its great way of using the yogurt and fruit and I fool them into eating the fruit by telling them the yoghurt is ice cream.
WHAT'S THE MOST EXOTIC THING IN YOUR FRIDGE?
I usually have a really good French or Italian cheese, but I always have a bottle of champagne in the fridge as life is a celebration.
WHAT DO YOU NEVER STORE IN THE FRIDGE?
I like seeing lots of fruit outside the fridge so that when the kids see the fruit they can just grab it and walk around the house with it. I try not to have fruit and vegetables sitting in the bottom of the crisper for too long.
WHAT DO YOU DREAM OF FINDING IN YOUR FRIDGE?
After a long day at work and when I do have a well-deserved night off, I love nothing better than getting home and finding sushi and sashimi already cut and ready for me to eat. Anything I don't have to prepare works for me!
