Review: Glamour Cake doughnuts at Lyttelton Bakery, Christchurch
A taste of… Glamour Cake at Lyttelton Bakery, 8 Norwich Quay, Lyttleton, Christchurch.
We'd heard… Lyttelton Bakery was selling the amazing doughnut and cake creations by Glamour Cake baker Bree Scott.
We ordered… A greedy three doughnuts to share so we could try a variety. Glamour Cake had its own display set up within the bakery, featuring that day's incredible offerings (they change daily).
Initially drawn to a snickers option, we ended up with the salted caramel brandy snap ($7), the lemon meringue ($8.50) and the truly OTT Willy Wonka lolly scramble ($10). They weren't cheap but, to be fair, they were massive. Two people could easily share one doughnut.

The Lemon Meringue was a bit of fun – it came with a syringe of lemon syrup to drizzle over the doughnut, as well as being full of tasty lemon custard and having a full meringue on top.
But it was no match for the spectacular salted caramel brandy snap. Whoever decided to put a crunchy brandy snap – covered with delicious caramel sauce – inside a cream-filled, sugar-dusted doughnut is a clever person indeed. Pure heaven.
The lolly scramble was certainly the most impressive to look at, with an assortment of candy dotted across fluffy pink and white marshmallow on top of the raspberry jam and cream-filled doughnut. Yet while it would certainly be a hit with the kids, it was perhaps a bit much for my (adult) tastes. I'll be sticking with the brandy snap from now on.
The service was… Friendly and efficient, with everyone happy to chat.
The vibe was… Very casual – your typical Kiwi bakery. While there was seating available, it's probably more of a grab-and-go kind of place. And there were also plenty of other options (biscuits, slices, sandwiches, etc) available if doughnuts really aren't your thing.
If you go… Go early. Seriously. We'd been warned the doughnuts sell out most days, so if you think you can show up mid-afternoon and get a good selection, think again. Saturdays are said to have the most offerings, but they're also the busiest, so be prepared for a queue. Check out the Glamour Cake Facebook page to see what's available that day – she also makes beautiful cakes to order.
