Winning the Australian reality show My Kitchen Rules was a "gift" for top pair Bree May and Jessica Liebich.

The Australian final aired last night in New Zealand, and the South Australian mums claimed the AU$250,000 prize in a tight race against Western Australians Chloe James and Kelly Ramsay, with a total score of 54 out of 60 from the judges.

Bree May said her and Liebich went into the competition hoping to make the top six, but had no idea they would win.

"You can't walk in there thinking 'I'm gonna win' because you don't know who you're up against, there were so many amazing cooks and the stars aligned for us."

The win was "indescribable", she said.

"...honestly it's the most amazing gift we've ever been given."

The pair's experiences during the competition were "nothing but positives", she said.

May said the competition showed the pair how much inner-strength they had.

Both mothers were now following their food-related dreams, with May focusing on her blog, Food According to Bree and Liebich looking to expand her organic food business Messy Jessy.

May's tip for New Zealand contestants in the upcoming local My Kitchen Rules series was to practise and also to stay positive no matter what.

"Be prepared for anything."

- My Kitchen Rules will air Sundays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays on TV One, starting Sunday.
