Neil Patrick Harris of How I Met Your Mother fame and his partner, actor David Burtka, put their home in Sherman Oaks up for sale at $NZ3.45 million and in less than a week a deal was in the works.

The traditional house, built in 1991, is decked out in this year's popular grey/beige colors. The stylish home has had its own star turns on Oprah's Next Chapter and InStyle magazine.

A formal entry, a step-down living room with a fireplace and built-in window seating, and an oversized kitchen that opens to a family room are among the rooms in the two-story home.

The 4,191 square feet of living space also contains six bedrooms and five bathrooms. A built-in pizza oven, a swimming pool and an outdoor shower are among exterior features.

Harris, 41, won a lead actor Tony this year for his role in the Broadway production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. He will star in the fall thriller Gone Girl. He has scores of film and television credits, including the title role in the 1989 to 1993 series Doogie Howser, M.D.

The property was purchased four years ago for $US2.1 million (current exchange rate makes that NZ2.42 million).
