The jury is out on whether this is more fun for the parents or the kids.

In some families, Elf on the Shelf is an essential part of the Christmas build up.

The toy elf is sold with the companion book Elf on the Shelf, A Christmas Tradition (available from book stores and online through sites like amazon.com), and the story is that it's his job to watch over your kids and report to Santa each night on whether they've been naughty or nice.

Your task as parents? To come up with new and engaging ways of displaying the scout elf each morning. Elves, apparently, get up to a lot during the night.

Forget Elf on the Shelf: This Christmas it's all about the Santa Cam

To help keep things interesting at your place this December, we've pulled together 15 of the best Elf on the Shelf scenarios from Instagram:

BEING SILLY WITH TOILET PAPER:

Perhaps your elf is a bit cheeky and likes to cause a bit of havoc while everyone is sleeping?

CATCHING UP ON THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF AUCKLAND:

There's no time for television in the North Pole, so your scout elf needs to catch up on all the best shows.

Will these army men be put on the naughty list after this stunt?

GETTING INTO DECORATING:

Sometimes when the scout elf gets back from the North Pole early, he likes to do a touch of Christmas decorating himself.

SPECIAL ELF GARDENING:

The scout elf often brings back candy cane seeds from the North Pole (a small portion of the lolly). Simply plant them in marshmallows over night and the next morning whole candy canes will have sprouted.

PROTESTING:

Your elf might get caught up in protest movements. Apparently this one was lured in by "hot activists".

PLAYING DRESS UP:

Who doesn't love Harry Potter? This scout elf is certainly a fan.

FROZEN (LITERALLY):

No one messes with Elsa.

Set up a patch of the "North Pole" your scout elf accidentally brought back with him.

ADRENALIN JUNKIE:

Maybe flying foxes are too safe for your scout elf - parachuting or hang-gliding might be more of his thing.

IN NEED OF SOME HELP:

The scout elf could also provide an activity for the day. One elf can't decorate a whole gingerbread house on his own after all.
