Natalie Jane's 5 tips for organising your wardrobe

Are you suffering from "too-many-clothes, nothing-to-wear syndrome?" On average, we wear 20 per cent of our clothes  80 per cent of the time. Our wardrobes are often bursting at the seams with clothing that we no longer wear or love and when we do want to wear an item, we struggle to find it.

There is often no real sense of order going on in there, which causes stress and anxiety and can be very overwhelming for most. Here are three essential steps to help you to restore order in your wardrobe, with a "place for everything and everything in its place."

DECLUTTER

It is important to know what is in EVERY nook and cranny. So, put aside some time (and schedule it in your diary) call a friend if necessary, get in the right head space and get started.

You will need to review your items and the easiest way to do this is by category – t-shirts, dresses, jeans, accessories, shoes etc.

Start with a category and gather all those items together. There may be some hiding in other areas of your home too – grab them as well. This way, you can see just how many you have of each item and you can ask yourself:  "Do I really need 25 white t-shirts?"

Trying them on may be necessary if you are doubtful about an item or haven't worn it in a while. If you didn't wear it last season, you are likely not to wear it the next. Only keep those items that you love, you honestly wear, that fit you now and you feel great in.

REORGANISE

Now that you have decluttered your wardrobe, it's time to reorganise your items. First of all, resist the temptation to overstuff them into spaces.

Hang items that you wear often where possible. That way, you can see at a glance exactly what you have when you open your wardrobe door.

Hang like with like – either by colour or sleeve length, depending on your preference.

Fold items into drawers and stack them vertically. This prevents them from wrinkling, is a great space-saver and allows you to see items much more easily than if they were folded horizontally.

Use drawer dividers for smaller items such as singlets and underwear – shoeboxes work well to divide items too.

Using baskets to store everyday casual shoes is a favourite of mine and another space-saver. Store remaining shoes on shoe racks or in clear plastic shoeboxes. Storage Box have a good variety of storage solutions for accessories and jewellery – get creative and have fun with it.

IN THE FUTURE

Having an organised wardrobe saves you time and means that you will know exactly what you need and where the gaps are. When shopping, remember to only buy items that you love and will wear. Only buy what you can pay for (beware of those credit cards) and don't buy something just because it's on sale. Mix it up – not everything has to come from a boutique. Some of my best buys have come from the op shop! Adopt the "one in, one out" rule where possible and declutter on a regular basis – every season is best.
