Every week we ask a Kiwi interior expert to tell us what they're loving now and how to use it. This week it's Hawke's Bay interior designers and bloggers Vic Bibby and Dael Brady.

Don't be surprised to see touches of velvet throughout our portfolio of clients' homes, and in our own homes. The sumptuous textile is a firm favourite of ours. Some people still associate velvet with their grandma's house, but we love the touch of elegance it brings. With thoughtful styling it's easy to achieve a modern take on this old classic.

It's not just us who love velvet. It is having a bit of a resurgence, and there are lots of beautiful velvet pieces in the market right now. To make a real statement, choose a velvet sofa to be the hero of your room. We love it velvet in rich jewel tones like emerald green, deep blue or plum. Velvet looks beautiful with brass or copper: the juxtaposition of soft and hard is stunning. Keep the styling simple and let the furniture pieces speak for themselves.

If you want to try introducing velvet in smaller doses, an occasional chair or velvet curtains are both fabulous options: a soft velvet chair will quickly become your favourite to curl up on. Team it with a leather sofa to add that lovely mix of textures, or let it shine next to a quieter, more conservative sofa. A velvet chair in the bedroom is a luxurious spot for a quiet cuppa.

The heaviness of the fabric means velvet curtains fall beautifully, framing your windows and keeping you toasty warm in the cooler months.

Velvet dining chairs are truly decadent! They may not suit a family with young children, but your adult guests will thank you at your next dinner party.
