It's Friday night and after a manic working week and it dawns on you that you invited friends over for drinks and they'll be here soon.

Before you either cancel or start darting about the house with a vacuum cleaner, consider taking a new approach.

Your guests will only be spending time in the 'public areas' of your house (eg the kitchen, bathroom and living room) and if you've been at work all week, your home is probably cleaner than you think it is.

If you ensure your guests have a clean and comfortable place to sit, your evening should get off to a great start.

If you ensure your guests have a clean and comfortable place to sit, your evening should get off to a great start.

So, rather than trying to clean your house from top to toe, read ahead and focus on quickly tidying these three places:

THE SOFA AND THE AREA SURROUNDING IT

If you ensure your guests have a clean and comfortable place to sit, your evening should get off to a great start. Ensure there is enough seating space for all of your guests, if you're short then bring out a few more chairs from other areas of the house.

Next, simply clear away any clutter on the sofa and give the coffee table a quick wipe down. If you own pets, quickly go over the couch with a lint roller to move excess hair and if time is permitting give the surrounding floor-space a quick vacuum. Done.

THE TOILET

It's a given that at some point in the evening, your guests will need to make the trip to the loo. You don't need to go overboard scrubbing the entire bathroom, but you do need to clean one area in particular: the toilet itself.

Light a scented candle and give the lid, base and toilet seat a quick but thorough wipe down and your whole bathroom will feel just that much cleaner.

GLASSWARE AND DINNERWARE

If you ensure you have a few clean glasses so you can pour everyone a drink and plates for everyone to eat from, there is no need to worry.

If you have access to a dishwasher, simply run a quick load of the essentials while you clean other areas of the house and they'll be ready for when your guests arrive. If not, handwash enough glasses and plates for each guest (plus one or two spare in case a glass/plate breaks) so you won't have to worry about cleaning anything once they're there.

That's it, you're all set for some Friday night fun. Enjoy.
